Does anyone know where I could get about 500 rounds of 223 ammo at a reasonable price? I'm needing to set up my new duty weapon and do a little practice before I qualify with it. The department does not supply long guns or ammo for the long guns. I had some ordered from sportsman guide but they have back ordered me again. I cc ant afford some of the prices I'm seeing especially for practice ammo, I'm not hoarding I need to shoot. By the way the rifle is a Bushmaster lower with a Spikes Battle Trigger, Bravo Company 14.5" upper, Eotech 552,and all dressed up with Magpul furniture. Should be a good shooter.

Suggest you talk to the chief firearms instructor at the law enforcement academy and ask him.   Right now Homeland Security has bought up a lot of ammo and what they missed everyone else is grabbing at a rate that keeps it off the shelves.  If you have a smart phone there is a walmart app that you can use to check for ammo at Walmart stores some have had luck with that I have not.  There is stuff coming in to the large sporting goods stores but there is usually a line to buy it.  Those that do buy it often sell it for an outrageous profit on Gunbroker.com.  Talk to  the firearms instructors in other agencies also if you can they may have some suggestions.

If that doesnt work use department letterhead and write the President and explain the problem that you are having.   Really - they dont understand how this move also effects those of us in small departments who used to be able to buy practice and duty ammo either by mail order or from local stores and now can not.

I ask for practice ammo and I get laughed at. I told them they have just as much of a responsibility to make sure I'm the best shot I can be as it is my own responsibility. They did not like that.

Departments have a 6-9 month lead time on ammo.  As an individual, you are either going to have to pay the price or wait till supply catches up to demand.

Sorry....that's the way it is.

You could try Equipment Exchange on here, or get some friends who have ammo. Maybe join up on some local facebook groups or talk to some guys at the range. There is ammo out there, you just have to find who has it.

Follow gunbot and be prepared to strike when a deal hits.  You have 3-8 minutes to load your cart and checkout when a good deal drops.
You and the other 38 million people all want the same ammo.

It'll get better eventually.  It's gonna suck for awhile longer though.

Once this demand is over, and the supply levels are still high they will have to cut prices to get rid of their overstock. Hopefully basic supply and demand applies here!

Define "reasonable price"?

I had to send brass off to get reloaded to have anything to shoot this summer

PSA has lake city steel core at 70 cents a round in either a 250 pack or 600 rnd can.

Reloading would be fine if you could find the components, it's almost as easy to find loaded ammo. I've got the equipment and need but no powder or bullets

Obviously this is the worst possible time for this.  I know plenty of depts. who are scrambling just to get enough ammo for some range practice, much less extra for individual officers.  I don't know if you've given it any thought, but what about a .22lr converson, or even a .22lr rifle for practice?  I know a lot of people who have moved over to this just because of the ammo cost savings, while still keeping the muscle memory of an AR platform.

Just a thought.  Otherwise you're still looking at 60-70 cents a round for your "practice" ammo.

^^^Finding 22lr is even tougher than finding 223

This is true. At least you can reload 5.56

OP, I see you are in AL.  If you can wait a couple of weeks, I will be home on leave in SE AL.  If you are LE, I will sell you 500 rounds at pre panic prices.  I have about 6-7k of 5.56 in the safe I have been collecting for a while.

If you can't wait that long, try Gulf States distributors in Montgomery.  They supply a lot of agencies and used to always have plenty of ammo at good prices.  I don't know their current state on ammo, but it might be worth a try.

Nice of you to offer that!

In my last department, we ordered ammo from Gulf States.  Their prices are good...even for an individual officer.  However, I ordered in fall of last year and it took me 3 months to get the ammo that I ordered for department use.  From what I hear now, even Gulf States is looking at 6-9 months ship time from time of order on everything except maybe 12 ga ammo.

Gulf States doesn't keep much, if any, ammo in stock.  All the ammo that I ordered from them was shipped from the factory where it was made.

Not trying to be a smartass here but why don't you guys wait in line at walmart like some other people do?
Our local PD's are complaining about not having ammo also and several walmarts in the area get it in 3-4 times a week.
If you talk to the counter help they will usually tell you when they put ammo out.
May only be 3 boxes at a time but try to being a friend or family member.

Good luck.

He needs 500 rds. At 3 box limit, that would take him quite a bit to acquire.

OP, if you still need your ammo, let me know. I can send some your way if need be.
