I just applied to the Indiana State Police and was wondering if anyone could explain how it works as far as what region you work in.  I own a house in northern Indiana is it common to be sent away from where you already live?  Do the provide temporary housing?  How long does it generally take to get back towards home?  Just curious, only applied not tested or interviewed yet. Thanks.

It really depends buddy, State police means that they can ship you anywhere on your state depending on dept's needs. Some people are lucky and get to work close to home but again, it all depends.

It depends on the need of ISP. They use to send a fair amount from every class to Gary but every district gets a few so it's anyones guess. There are also random assignments to one of the river boat casino's that some (usually not right out of the academy though) get. The State of Indiana owns around 11 riverboat Casino's and controls a big interest in the gaming companies that they let operate on them which is why ISP does most of the security on them.

Troopers haven't been on the boats since about 2007.

Did the Indiana  Excise Police take it over since then?

No sir. The Indiana Gaming Commission set up their own enforcement branch that took over. They are specifically trained for that duty.

Thats good. I know a few Troopers around 2007 in my Guard unit (I retired that year) that were dreading that duty. good for them then. Only makes sinse, thats what gaming commision is suppose to be doing.

As with any state police you'll get sent wherever they need you. You might get lucky and get your locale, if not then you'll have to wait until a spot comes open and you have enough seniority to beat out someone else for the locale you want, could takes years or six months. Housing is on your dime once you're out of the academy.
