We made the switch from the Fed hydroshocks to Winchester Ranger years ago. A Winchester guy actually came out to our range and demonstrated the differences between the rounds, which was quite remarkable.
The expansion/penetration seemed to be much more consistent with the Ranger stuff, and at the time, it was even priced cheaper. I think everyone had jumped on the hydroshock band wagon because of the feds using it. Keep in mind that the Ranger stuff for all intensive purposes is 'rebranded' black talon ammo. I was impressed enough with the Ranger ammo that I carry it to this day (probably 8-9 years later) in my off duty Sig. The round we carry is the 180gr variant. |

We carry 180 gr. Gold Dot. For back up or off-duty guns we are also required to carry Gold Dot. I have a S&W 442 .38 and load it with .38 +P 125 gr. short barrel Gold Dot. us too, went from Hydrashocks after poor performance in our last OIS. 180gr 40cal for duty Glocks, Gold Dots off duty too. J- |

We went to Winchester Ranger (165 Grain) load as issue round several years ago and it has worked well in in at least 3 OIS shootings that I recall. 1 was DRT, and 2 lived but did not return fire after being hit.
Off duty ammo is supplied by the officer and has to be inspected and approved by range master (no reloads, must be JHP). I carry hornady gold dot in my off duties and most others carry either gold dots, one of the federal JHP loadings or hornady). |

Any of those would be up to the task, they're all good rounds. We carry 180 grain HSTs, but I'd be content with any of them. |

Whick1,
I carry 180 Gr Rangers in a Glock 22. I can tell you from first hand experience, these rounds engaged a suspect, from inside a black and white (through the windshield), the suspect was 30 feet from the bumper and was struck and put down before he managed to get off a shot. Suspect survived, but the damage from one of the rounds was so great the surgeon was unable to remove the bullet. I trust my life to these rounds and can personally say they are powerful, accurate and reliable. Just my observation, I'm sure the other premium rounds listed will do the job as well. Stay safe all. In low light conditions, it has a very little muzzle flash. I did notice that it left more carbon build up in the barrel compared to other ammo. Our current issue is Federal 180 gr HST. |
