$27,000 or so to start in my Agency....we have the highest requirements of any of the other Police agencies in my state but the lowest salary.  It does not make any sense.  I barely survive financially.

[#7]
As a Patrol LT my base pay is $90K.

I made $120K last year after OT and details (I work 8 hrs a week extra on average).

I"m right there with ya man.

I make just above $31k.  I have been a sworn officer for the better part of a decade and with the sate for the last 3.5 years.  I have not had a raise since I started with the state.  I work for a state college now but the road does not pay any better in this area.

When I started as a sworn police officer for a local town back in 2002...  I made just over $6.00 per hour.

That was working night shift.

The South is horrible when it comes to LEO pay especially state agencies.  I could make a little more working for a county, but I really like my job (PPP) and the bank hours.  Over the last several years they have suspended our merit and cost of living raises due to budget constraints.  We are suppose to finally get a 5% raise this summer....I hope.

LOL, I feel ya brother. Last year I made $27,182 gross, $19,681 net. State agency, and I have nearly 5 years in LE. I once averaged out my daily net pay (on a 8-hour day, which mind you I rarely worked only 8 hours), and it was $64.75 per day. I started out in 2007 at $10.30/hour.

In neighboring counties the base pay averages $32K-$38K/year.

I have three jobs, OP. Most LEOs I know have at least one side job, part-time business, or work a lot of overtime details to maintain a decent lifestyle.

I make about 35K as a CO IV for the state.

I made about $33.5K last year with minimal OT.

I value my free time to be an OT hog.

Been promised a detective slot going on 4 years, and an opening should be coming up a few more months.

By some chance I get passed over, I'm done with LE.

I don't know how you guy do it, making lower $30Ks!

Yep. I worked with a guy who worked nights full-time with me, and then switched uniforms/cars and worked days full-time with a neighboring agency. He usually slept most of the night.

I think my taxes this year said something like 130k.  Bunch of forced OT this year tho.

Base is 88K, but with OT, I've been averaging 105-110K over the last three years.  That's top of the scale for patrol sergeants.  I think our patrol guys are around 68-70K at the top of the scale (w/o OT).

ETA:  Not an ice cube's chance in hell I'd do this job for 30K.  I hope the cost of living is is equally lower where you guys are.

It is lower, but it is not that much lower to justify these paltry salaries. I live in a medium size city.  My rent and utilities add up to about $860/month.  I don't have any debt thank god except a small car/insurance payment of $232/month for a total of about $1100/month.  That leaves me around $150/week for food, gas, and everything else!!  If something goes wrong, or if gas and utilities go up, I am in a real pinch and have very little wiggle room.  I can no longer save money either since taking this job and have no money left over to take advantage of my generous vacation schedule.  So no, the salaries are no where near cost of living even down here.

42k last year give or take. No paid OT until you've maxed your comp time.

I work for one of the top ten wealthest counties in the entire country and last year I grossed 26k working full time. Needless to say the cost of living is high where I work making it impossible to live off this salary. Like most I have to work multiple jobs and be tired pretty much 24/7 just to put food on the table.

My department issed one badge and one box of ammo. Absolutely everything else had to be payed out of my own pocket.

EDIT: Forgot to add, all my FTO training had to be done on volunteer time. I could not train on normal paid shfits, I can to come in on my days off, on my own time to do it.

WTF? $6.00 an hour? Even in 2002?

It varies a lot depending on OT..........there has been a lot of OT in recent years due to lack of staffing. When I first got hired in 1995 through about 2005 there was basically zero OT except for court pay.  Basepay for a new hire is around $45,000.....5 years on is $67,000.......with OT I made $105,500 last year.

I don't know all the details but there was a problem a couple months ago. All I know is the lawyers and the command staff "got it worked out" so it wasn't a legal issue.

These are the reasons I'm actively looking to get hired elsewhere. My boss knows I'm trying to get hired at a different department as I'm not trying to hide it.

I'd be looking into it to find out if the "worked out" part found that back pay was owed.
I don't see how they can legally require you to come in as a non-salaried person and work for free.

I'm with you on this one. I don't see how that is legal if he was a paid employee and the training was required.

My dept pays for all training and classes we get approved for.

ETA: Read Section 553 of the FLSA whenever you get a chance.  Lots of good shit to know.

As a state CO you make 33k in the academy which is 4 months.  once you get into the prison it goes to 40k per year.  After a year of service you go to just under 57k. This is not including holiday pay which you get 15 of those with atleast 2 holidays a year forced off.  OT has really slowed down due to the hiring of alot of new guys but is there if you want it.   you top out without making rank at a hair over $80k
