I have my first shift as an intern with the sheriffs office on Friday night 6pm to 4-6am.  Large urban area with some of the worse parts in the district ill be working with, hoping the night shift will be pretty exciting.   Any tips for making a good impression?   Never know who you might meet and then see at an interview.

Advice?  Yeah, don't be like the intern who just started with my agency this week. He showed up needing a shave in tattered jeans with a polo shirt that was wrinkled and too small.  At least he was on time.  If they didn't tell you what to wear, show up in khakis and a button down.  Make sure your clothes fit, are clean and pressed.  Bring something to write with and something to write on.  Keep them with you at all times.

Bottom line, treat each day like a job interview.

So far that is the plan.   Shirt and tie, binder with paper, and at least 15 minutes early.

Just looking for anything additional that might come in handy.

You're there to learn so don't forget to ask questions.

Hopefully you'll get to ride with an officer who honestly wants to show you stuff and doesn't mind you being there.

I'd ditch the tie unless it is a clip on. If you are with the deputies, you are one of them in the bad guy's eye. The last thing you want to see is some gang banger choking you with your own tie.

Yea, skip the tie as it will make you stick out more and could be a safety hazard.  I'd wear a Polo type shirt if allowed.

Keep quiet unless asked something by the officer, keep your eyes open/pay CLOSE attention to EVERYTHING, and under no circumstance answer anything asked of you by a criminal.  The criminal will be curious and want to know who you are, it's none of their business...

The tie is part of the dress code they gave me.  Unless  or until I'm told other wise I'll just deal with the thing.

Thanks for the tips guys.

I would recommend this,
First Impressions are lasting impressions, so early is on time, on times is late, and late is unacceptable
We were given one mouth and two ears for a reason,
An officers first level of force is professional presense so look the part.  This applys to interns too
Always know your location and direction of travel.  This is for your safety as well as the Officers you are working with.

Most importantly, Have fun and remember the only stupid question is the one that is never asked.
