I knew a guy who dropped off the face of the earth.

The most likely candidate under his name is dead. He died in 1999.

How would I find out the cause of death, or his criminal history. (I'd like a mugshot to verify it's him, plus I'd like to see if he'd straightened his life out before he passed.)

It's this a "write a letter and pay somebody" thing or would some of this require opening court documents?

Before I got into a big gumshoe thing, I'd try contacting a surviving relative and just asking them.

I contacted a friend of his sister, and an old school chum. Wall of silence. I recall what I now know to be the early symptoms of mental health issues. I suspect his death at age 29 may have been suicide. You can imagine how indelicate it would be to approach his sister.

Does Indiana have the death penalty? He was.... violent.
