Love the gratuitious inclusion of the local cop-hater's opinion....

Portland police mistakenly fire live rounds from a less-lethal shotgun, wounding a suspect

A Central Precinct officer Thursday morning mistakenly fired five live shotgun rounds at a man refusing to follow police orders, when he intended to fire bean bags, Portland police announced about seven hours after the incident.

A 15-year bureau veteran was placed on administrative leave in connection with the first mistaken shooting involving live rounds loaded into a less-lethal bean-bag shotgun in the bureau's history. The bureau began carrying the less-lethal shotguns in the mid-1990s.

Looks like their shotguns will now have orange stock for LL rounds.  A local dept here no longer allows lethal ammo for shotguns.  Less lethal only.  Another dept here with 2800 sworn officers has shotguns with orange stocks specifically for LL ammo.  Plus the less lethal ammo is not to be loaded in the shotgun until deployment.  I think they have side saddles on those.

I bet the officer in question was thinking "man they sure loaded these bean bags hot!"

Feel bad for the officer. Willing to bet he is hung out to dry.

Exact reason why I feel less letal should not be used in a weapon capable of firing live rounds. Sage FTW.

Incidents like this are part of the reason we are moving to 37mm for LL use.  We buy 12ga slugs and buckshot by the truckload, but have never bought 37/40mm HE-DP.

"The wounded man was struck by five pellets in the hip"    The officer missed  possibly 4 times?  All the buckshot I have is 00 and have 9 pellets.

Hence why we don't use LL 12 gauge SGs.

..........we use 40mm LL.......that way you can't fuck it up and 40mm > 12 gauge.
