Gents,

I've been tasked with spec'ing and sourcing 4 new patrol rifles for my department. I will need to have rifles, slings, mags, and mounts. I will probably also be updating the patrol rifle policy as well. What do you guys recommend in terms of models and dealers? Where can I get the most gun for the least money (the less we can pay for the gun, the more goodies we can get)? Anybody interested in forwarding me copies of their policies? Every bit of info will be helpful. I've basically been given the green light, but with cost as a limiting factor. Off hand I quoted roughly $800 per rifle (for the rifle alone) to my boss. Hopefully I didn't shoot myself in the foot.

Here's what I'm thinking - Quality brand (Bushmaster, RRA, S&W, Armalite, etc) preferably a nationally recognized brand that offers an armorer's school.
Carbine length w/ collapsible stock
16" M4 profile (No ATF hassles)
Semi-auto
Flat-top w/ carry handle

Optics are simply out of the budget, but I will write the policy so that they are approved. Lights will be approved as well, but I will need to find an inexpensive way to fund it if I'm going to have them and an attachment system included in the initial purchase.

So to recap, please let me know your thoughts on-

Brand
Model
Price
Dealer
Policy

Thanks!

(current rifle selection is as follows - 2 DRMO M16A1's, 1DRMO M14, one personally owned AR15. New rifles will be in mounts on the partition, I'm thinking Santa Cruz to accomodate optional rail systems and attachments)

Why dont you authorize personal rifles. You will find that many will purchase their own. Minimal expense to the dept. Just buy mounts for the cars.

There are also a bevy of federal grants out there. We got something on the order of 100-120 Colts with 14.25 inch barrels and 3 mags apiece fairly cheap.

If you need money, just ask Uncle Sam!

There is the best answer.

Set up the program for bare bones rifles being issued. It will get more guns out there. Let the cops pay for the mods.

We were told last year that we could apply for 100% of our agency to carry M16s through the DRMO.  We were approved, just waiting for the weapons.  Already have several.  Free is good AND we save M16A1s from the shredder.

The money is already from a grant, so win-win. It showed up the other day and I was told, 'Make it happen!' There's no way personal weapons would fly, not because the chief won't go for it (he already does) but because the sorry cheap bastards either won't buy them, or will buy some bottom feeder shit. I still plan on having personal weapons authorized by policy, as they currently are. I've got the opportunity to equip them with some good rifles, for minimal cost to the dept, I just have to pin down exactly what to get.

ETA - I already upgraded the chief's order from 'Let's buy some new shotguns with this money', to 'OK we'll get patrol rifles, tell me what to buy'

I'm trying here, folks

Get a Spike's LE carbine- $799. Probably one of the best deals out there for a quality rifle with MilSpec parts. Then go with Some Mag-Pul Pmags, should be able to get them for $10 or less a piece, probably order them with MagPul MOE handguards to expedite mounting of lights. The light kits are only $20 or so for the rail to mount whatever. The spikes come with carry handles and let the officers buy their own optics, for good budget optics look at the Vortex SPARC, about $200 a piece.

So for four Spikes LE carbines with 12 pmags, 4 slings, and light mounting kits, your looking at about $3500.

You say personal weapons wont fly but they are already approved and going to be approved. Sounds confusing. But just provide a list of approved rifles and features and guys will prob buy them.
