| No not the movie.Currently unemployed and wondering if I paid my way through the academy would I be able to find work as a policeman ? Im 42 clean record not in the best shape and credits a little shaky. |

In California, they will go over every part of your life with a fine toothed comb, especially your credit. Get that cleaned up before you apply. Start working out because running will be a big part of your life. If you put yourself though the academy, you could be hired before you graduate. I knew a few that were putting themselves through and got picked up while in the academy. |
|
But on that note, be prepared to wait a while.
I'm the first self sponsored cadet to get hired on with a department, and we graduated November 5th. I start full time Feburary 1st. Mind you, I graduated with guys who have degrees, military experience, or both. I don't have a degree or military experience. |
| Look around for requirements at different departments you would like to work at. Some might have their own academy and they might require you to attend theirs too. When I went to the academy there was self sponsored cadets that were able to find work. We had a 52 year old that was able to find work at a department that did not have an age limit. |
| I feel sorry for u guys that gotta pay yer own way through the academy, and then not even know if u will have a job when yer done. Where I live, agencies are required to send u to the state academy which certifies for all LE agencies in the state. The agency is required to hire u first, then they have I believe 12-18 months to send u through the academy to get certified. |
| Last time I applied it was to The Broward Sheriffs Office didn't pass the interview part. Before that I was almost in with Miami Dade.Passed the CJBat,brought in required paperwork, passed interview, polygraph test then they had this test that you would try to settle a domestic quarrel between a husband an wife settle it and write a report. It's videotaped and then they determine if you passed. The first time they said I didn't settle nothing. The second time I made the mistake of existing the room with the wife to hear her side of the story. It just gets so fustrating sometimes trying to make it and coming only so far. Then you see some skumbags who've made it and just squander their career away from bribes, traffic stops were they try to get some sexual favors or sell narcotics out of the squad car. |

Happens but not common. |

I went thru a college academy in New Mexico when I was 19... the state guy who gave us the test said our academy did on the average better on the test.. alot of my classmates went on and got local jobs, some stayed in college and got federal jobs.
there is a college academy in my area I live in now and the small local depts hire alot from the academy, although most are not high paying. but good to start and get experience |
It really depends on the state..... I think Florida is doing better than Michigan where I live. In Michigan I think every department is laying off officers

Depends where in FL you are. I graduate March 1st and am paying my own way. It isn't easy, but it can be done. Most of my class is paying their own way through. I'm in central Florida, Orlando area.
I can tell you if you are not in shape, fix that first. We lost have our class in the last 5 months, mostly due to people coming in out of shape. Learn to love running, push-ups, sit-ups and jumping jacks. From what I've seen a degree is also huge in getting hired. My friends that have 4 year degrees or masters had a much easier time getting hired. Your debt will also be an issue. Try to get that fixed before applying. In Florida the economy has been pretty rough the last couple years, so it's very competitive. |

Are you in law enforcement now? OP: I am certain you could around here, if the market weren't INUNDATED. They like older applicants though, it seems. |
