I've been trying to keep my driving record good for the past 2.5 years since my last few tickets I got. I haven't gotten anything in the 2.5 years since.... until today. I just got a ticket for going 9mph over the speed limit. It was one of those instances of speeding up too early on a highway leaving town.... all because I took the wrong route, than what I am used to taking...where you can indeed, speed up to 75mph. Anyways... My record WOULD have been clean for three years, and thus fall off my record, come August. So now this August, I will, likely, only have this 9mph over speeding ticket.

How likely is it that this one ticket will prevent me from getting any jobs in the EMS field? I just passed my class with flying colors, and was getting really excited to finally get started in this career.... but now I'm affraid I've screwed up and won't be able to.

I would not worry about it, just be up front and honest if they ask about your driving history. When I did the ambulance thing they were just starting to do EVOC for EMTs and the company was starting a driver orientation more than tossing the new guy the keys and grinning.

The only thing that is pretty much a write-off for emergency work pre-employment is getting a DUI... depends on the agency as to how long it's a preclusion to employment. Some places it's 2 years, others it's permanent.

I've never had a DUI, so that shouldn't be an issue than?

So, basically what you are saying, is that you have ONE ticket on your record in THREE years? Yes?

I don't think that you will have to much to worry about.

Well more at this point in time... but come august it will only be this one that I just got in three years.

ETA: Everytime I got a ticket, it wasn't willful speeding... it was just speeding when I thought the speed limit was higher... or I missed the sign or something like that. It makes me wish someone could invent a GPS program that can also tell you what the speed limit is on the road your on... that way if you miss your sign, it can set off a nice alarm in your car that alerts you to slow down.

If such a system existed, I'd NEVER get a speeding ticket again.

It will really depend on the agency.

Years ago, as long as you had a driver's license you could get hired anywhere.  Now more and more places, even volunteers, are checking your drivers abstract.

Some places won't care about a single ticket, but...

I know at least one company that mandates you have to report any ticket received, on duty or off, and claims that you have to consult their legal department on any ticket, even if you got it off duty (but that's a whole other story).

It really depends on that particular agency... that said, none of the places I know of would DQ you for a simple traffic cite.

Depends on the insurer of the Dept you want to work for.

They may or may not allow people with specific traffic infrations to operate their ambulances.

I know Dane County (WI) is self insured, and any DUI is a DQ, whether you're a new hire or a senior medic.

The agency I work for has a point limit as well as certain others that will dq you .  speeding 15mph over or reckless driving are both dq events.  If you you haven't plead "no lo" you might consider that.  It lets you take the fine but not the points and it does not hit your mvr as hard.

Depends on where you want to work, I know of one agency in WY that if you get 2 tickets a year have to "justify" them & if they are speeding tickets you are gone, no questions asked.

3 tickets in a year and you are gone, no questions asked.
