Well i took my first police test last Wednesday.  Around 175 people took it and the top 30 scores would move on to the oral and physical interview process.  Well today i got a huge packet in the mail.  Seeing that envelope was like getting into college all over again.  I scored a 93 and am one of those top 30 candidates who will be interviewing in a couple weeks!  Any interview pointers from the guys who have been through it.  I'm so excited and nervous at the same time.

Tell the truth.

Don't try to BS the board.

Good luck.

Be honest in the answers you provide.

Oral boards can be interesting.  Be prepared for the possibility of trick questions, especially when it comes to questions of chracter or integrity.  Something along the lines of:

Q.  Have you ever told a lie?
A. No.

Q.  Have you ever stole something?
A. No.

Q. While you were in school, you never took someone's pencil without asking?
A. Well, yes.

Q. Thats kinda like telling a lie isnt it?
A.

Respect the Oral board, and take it seriously as your answer, demeanor and ability to articulate answers are under scrutiny.  But don't take it so seriously that you choke and freeze up.  Think about displaying  a confident demeanor that is balanced by an aire of respect.  The one thing I've seen go really well for applicants is when the board thought they were given genuine answers to questions.  No long pauses or long answers to questions.  Also maintaining eye contact with the interviewer or board members shows respect and is one of the first indicators of honesty.

+1

Also try to catch the names of the people on the board.  When answering the questions.....do it like this......"Well Captain Smith, I believe Community Orientated Policing is good strategy because......"

update: I passed the interview!  Moving on to the PT testing next saturday.  I also did exceptional on another test for 5 different departments.  I passed the  PT test this morning and have 3 more interviews lined up in the next few weeks.  I am treating each and every opportunity as if it is my only one and not getting my hopes up for any of them.
