I think this could be the right place to put this. I have a couple of questions regarding BP agents. I can only find age cut off limits, but no minimum age. My problem being I want to apply as soon as possible, but I dont turn 21 until next April. Also, is there a list of jobs to choose from, or are you assigned to whatever they want to be in? My only concern is getting stuck behind a desk all day. That is the exact opposite of what I want. I speak spanish very well (almost 6 years of formal education in it). I also have an associates degree in criminal justice. Could this help, or hinder, in getting hired?

Ultimately most any federal LE agency can put you where they want you, however as a BPA, I'd say you don't have to worry too much about being stuck behind a desk if you don't want to be. I would be more worried about being stuck at a vehicle check point or something, but I guess preference boils down to the individual person. That's just my experience knowing a couple of BP guys. There's a few that frequent this forum also who could answer your question a little better probably.

As for an associates in criminal justice, that will always help you with any law enforcement agency. It may not be a golden ticket in, but it definitely doesn't look bad either. Unfortunately, when I applied to get my name in the system, they were more focused on whether or not you had a ba/bs or if you anticipated obtaining a ba/bs within the following couple months, I didn't see any considerations for associates degree in regards to a higher entry level pay grade. Regardless it still looks good and isn't going to hinder anything.

I have been in the application/hiring process to become a Border Patrol Agent since I was 19 so your age is fine.

the age thing really concerned me. another thing is the rediculous amount of time the process takes. i had a buddy that went a year and a half in a process and then was denied. that just seems rediculous to take that long.

The minimum age is 18 but I'd expect it would be hard for someone that young to meet the qualifying work experience or educational requirements.  You don't get to choose your assignments but there are some that you can volunteer for once you pass your probationary period.  Even some of the desk jobs can be challenging and career enhancing.   Day to day assignments vary from have a large area to cover, to a stationary observation point.  You can also be assigned indoors to process or operate cameras.  You can bet that as a trainee you'll be the first one they call in to process, transport, or pull hospital watch for injured aliens.

Your Spanish and degree will help.  If you have a high enough GPA you'll also get hired at a higher pay grade.   Good luck!
