Too many

Not much here locally, one local small city PD just told its recruits in the Academy they won't have jobs when they graduate. State Police have a hiring freeze to knock their ranks down through attrition/retirements. Most PDs here have been understaffed for years so they are just maintaining status quo for now.

They weren't talking any at the beginning of the year.  Now it's between 5 and 30 (department has 350 sworn).

The county board here keeps banging the drum about eliminating positions, even though we are already understaffed. It would result in losing any coverage from 11 PM to 7 AM for unincorporated areas of the county for the first time since 1970.

Prime time commercial burglaries, gas station robberies, and auto theft/burglaries.

We are well aware of that.

I don't see them cutting social services, though

I know you are aware.  The ones holding the purse strings typically don't give a shit and rather keep social services/welfare fully funded, instead of keeping public safety running with adequate manpower and serviceable equipment.  The Sheriff's Office here is running patrol vehicles with 200,000+ miles on them.  I feel lucky to have a 2006 Crown Vic with 98K miles on it.

Thats downright unsafe. At least we swap ours out at about 100K. The repair costs spiral after that milestone.

I am guessing that the politicians pushing this idea live in incorporated ares that have their own police forces and thus would be unaffected by the cuts.

Were hiring about 7 but it only backfills positions that have become vacant after retirements etc.  On the flip side I've heard we may have as many as 7 or 8 current employees are in backgrounds with other agencies right now.  We just essentially took a 2% pay cut now that we"re paying 2% of our pers contribution and we are the lowest paid in county currently (amazingly our city manager is highest in county..hummm).  Our staffing levels are what we had in 1970 with a huge population boom since then.   Even though times are tight we"re fortunate to not be facing layoffs.

A few cities around here were talking layoffs, but something happened in their budget and now they are hiring.  VMRC and the DGIF are both hiring at least 10 officers.  I know my department is going to be hiring a new officer really soon...to replace me...

I was out of town during the meeting. I was told today if we have layoffs it will not be on a last hired first fired basis. But based on job evaluations.

Not bad at all! The horror stories of COMPSTAT and grand jury indictments are enough to keep me away, that's for sure.

COMPSTAT only sucks if you're a boss who has to go there to speak. Then you get ripped apart like in The Wire.

The latest word is no NYSP Academy until 2013...if then. We are expected to bleed 20% (1000 members) in that time. They are actually considering offering early outs for senior members but I do not see that coming through. They are consolidating patrol areas and working on plans to actually close stations. meanwhile the welfare rats get to keep their 40% increases in benefits.

The 10 most junior guys in my department just got a "we need to talk about your future" email from the Bureau Chief.  We haven't had such low staffing levels in decades (we're at 0.98 cops / 1000 citizens - the state average is 1.6 cops / 1000 citizens).

Were not laying off, in fact were adding a few transfers to make up for retirements.  What we had to do though was take "furlough" days....3 so far this year, to keep the city budget afloat.......I think its a crap way of handling things to take serious $$$ out of all city employees wallets to pay for crappy budgeting.

0.98 cops/1000 is low........we are at about 1.35cops/1000 and no doubt we are understaffed, OT is rampant to just to keep a shift at minimum manpower. We used to be right at about 2.0 cops/1000 when I got hired in 1995 and we never had problems with shift coverage, but almost no OT, now OT is out of control............last I checked USDOJ recommended manpower numbers were Suburban 2.0 cops/1000 and Urban 3.0 cops/1000.

Politicians ignore the ratios anyway. We are 8 or 9 guys below what we should have, based on our population.

139 Police officers face lay-offs

A little more info

Pretty much happening everywhere...

Cities are using the current economic "crisis" to gut budgets and contracts, feeling the monies saved from Police and Fire are better spent else where.

...and we get blamed for diminished service level and long response times.  Damed if you do and damed if you don't.
