Well, my vacuum cleaner just died and I am faced with my first vacuum purchase of my own! Any advice out there on what the best vacuum for pet hair and allergy sufferers would be? Our dog sheds very bad (German Shepherd) and I have allergy issues. We were thinking a Dyson would be best, but any advice would be greatly appreciated!

DYSON Animal FTW!

Liked the Dyson so much we bought a second one for upstairs. You'll be amazed at how much dust and crap you regular vacuum misses after using one.

Dyson is awesome...but my wife and I didn't want to pay that much for a vacuum.

So we got the Bissel one at Wal-Mart that said it was for pets.  Holy crap it picks up SO MUCH more than our old vacuum.  Like hair-wise it picks up everything in one back-forth swipe versus the old vacuum needing a bunch of swipes.

So far two for the Wal*Mart Bissel and three for Dyson... Hmm...

+1 million on the dyson

I absolutely love love my dyson. I had no idea how much dirt my other vacuum was leaving in the carpet. It is amazing at removing cat hair. The carpets are so much cleanier than they have ever been.

Our Dyson really sucks. Used the Hoover canister/hepa/whatever on the floor in the den. Had to empty the Dyson twice. Spend the money and buy the Dyson.

$400 once on a Dyson, it will clean your floors better than anything I know of, and it will last you 10+years
. . . or $75 a year on a cheap one that doesn't get the dirt off your floors.

You pick.

10 years?  Seriously?

This past summer I had a job of cleaning houseboats on the nearby lake and from my
experience, the orecks are amazing! I did use a Dyson a few times and liked them (so if
your heart is already set, I see no problem) but I preferred the oreck. We also used some
of the less expensive brands that can be found at Target or WalMart and they worked well, I
just cannot recall what brands they were (sorry!). Dysons can be pretty pricey though so
choose wisely!

I love my Kirby.  I would have thought that a self propelled vacuum would be silly, until I used this.  Without the power assist, this things sucks down to the carpet so hard that it is very difficult to move.  Never used a Dyson or Oreck though.

Forty year old hetero man on a gun forum, singing praises of his vacuum cleaner.  Just sad.

I'm also available for cooking and laundry advise.

I have a Rainbow that I bought new in 1995 and it still runs like a champ, and does a hell of a good job at cleaning the whole house.  Yeah...you get what you pay for.

Last year I bought a Dyson Animal also, and it's been a great sweeper.  It's more convenient to use than the Rainbow if I don't want to clean and dust the whole house...I like the Dyson for the mid week touch ups or to clean up when company is coming, etc.

I have a lot of wall to wall carpeting, I have a cat, we run a woodburner in the cold months, and we are both allergy prone.  I like to keep a clean house and between the Rainbow and the Dyson, I can keep up even with all that.

Why don't you have an American friend buy them during a sale and then ship it to you. Wouldn't that save $?

Maybe we can work a deal.  I can provide a Dyson if you pay in 3 gallon flush toilets.  There is nothing like smuggling real toilets over the Canadian border.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions! I was finally able to stretch my husband on the rack enough for him to get my new vacuum - lol!

I just placed an order for my new Dyson DC 25 Animal series! Bed Bath and Beyond honors competitors adds and usually have 20% off coupons available, so if you're in the market that's one option :) That's the route we took! I can't wait until it's delivered later this week! Yay!

Haha, I never thought I'd be so excited about a vacuum cleaner!

That's how I did it...it was a $500 vacuum that I got for $400.
And if you think you're excited now, wait until you use it!

You put your husband on the rack too!?!?!? haha

I know exactly what you mean! It has been driving me crazy not having one! I've been doing everything I know to get the hair from our German Shepherd out of the carpet! I can't wait!!!

Glad you got yourself a Dyson.  The capt bought one (DC14-Animal) for me for Christmas a year or so ago, and it's been worth it.  $400ish including shipping.  Doesn't quite live up to the hype, but it's still the best vacuum I've ever owned, by far.  Someday I'll build my dream home, get a central vac system, and I'll happily get rid of my Dyson.

My Dyson DC25 Animal was just delivered yesterday and I LOVE IT! I had no idea how dirty my house was! I have to say, I was rather embarrassed although for about two weeks I was cleaning my carpets (or attempting) with one of those small floor vac's made for quick clean-ups in the kitchen or something. I've never been so impressed with a vacuum, even the MR likes it! He took it away from me twice so he could use it! lol Now THAT'S a vacuum I like! Haha!

I spread baking soda on the carpets and left it for an hour or so then vacuumed it up and today someone came over and said they couldn't smell our dog at all! I've done that before with my old one and never had the same reactions. I love it!!!
