Geez, this is the gayest thing I've ever posted.
I have a pair of work pants that started coming apart at the seam, so I bought a little sewing kit and did my best.
How do I terminate my work?

Perfect idea! I'll havea beer instead, because I don't have martinis in the house.

But...you're SEWING....and if you aren't sewing a gaping hole in SOME part of your anatomy...a martini is PERFECT.

True.  OTOH, if it ever comes to that, I now know how to prevent myself from bleeding to death.

I use one piece of thread doubled when I do repairs.  When you're done, make a few stitches back in the opposite direction, cut the thread with a lot of excess.  Now you've got 2 threads hanging.  Take one of them, re-thread the needle, make one more stitch to give you just a bit of material between the one hanging thread and the other so that you can make a square not that doesn't get lost in your needle hole in the fabric.

If you don't want threads hanging you can put them back on the needle and weave them through the seam hiding them.

I had to teach myself sewing, so take it for what it's worth.

At least you did: I am sewing disabled!
I can do buttons. That's IT!
The joke with my crowd of friends is that I'm the "cooking" friend...and I often feed my sewing friend for helping me NOT get arrested for indecent exposure!

I was so excited to actually be able to answer a question around here, and everybody beat me to it.  This is what I get for taking a nap.  Sheesh.

Hope you got them fixed, DF.

What I usually do is a backstitch:

Then before I pull the thread taut, I put the needle through the loop so that it ties a small knot.  Do that a couple of times and you're secure.

back stitching is one way to do it.
but a more secure way it to lock the stitch.
just stitch it up, then back stitch and leave a little loop in your last stitch.
pass the needle and thread thru the loop and form another loop.
use the thread that formed the first loop to tighten down the first loop.
pass the needle thru the second loop and form the third loop.  tighen down the second loop.
repeat the process four or five times and a the end make one more two more stitches in the garment to hide the tag end.  then cut off the tag close to the fabric.

it's not gay.  it's how you keep from spending $5 bucks or so to have someone sew up your clothes or mend a button.

and for the naysayers...  mama taught you how to wipe your butt.  why didn't she teach you how to sew on a button?

My husband knows how to sew,and our son does too. He was taught in 4-H. They also both know their way around a sewing machine.

So do I.  I know to keep my fingers out of that thing that moves up and down and that other thing that spins around.

I thought it sewed automatically?  It looks easy when mom does it.  What could be so hard about it?

It's not that hard, especially if you can sew a straight line and read and follow directions.

I tied four of them before I figured out how to get the knot close enough to the seam to do any good.

LOL

Most of the men in my family were in the Scouts or military, those boys could tie a knot!  The clothing would literally be worn off them, but by God those knots held.

Glad to here you worked it out though.
