Has anyone here actually read Thucycides? I find him difficult to read, especially since I don't have intimate knowledge of the various Greek city states. Any good books out there regarding the Pelopennisian war that you can recommend?

...one with pictures would be nice...

I've read it over 20 years ago.  Since then I've aquried an illustrated edition of Thucydides with plenty of maps.   This helps you to keep track of the various city states.  I don't know if it helps, but I read Herodotus (The Persian Wars) first.  It gives you a lot of background information that helps when you read Thucydides.

Donald Kagan wrote a couple of really good ones on the subject. Easier to read than Thucycides
