A few days ago on another thread, I mentioned my diving in the Dismal Swamp and our discovery and excavation of the CSS Appomattox. There was some interest in the subject, so I started a new thread in General Discussion about the boat, our team, and the excavation. It has gotten much more attention that I thought it would. After all, when the story went out on the AP release back in Nov 2009, nobody seemed to care.
Here is the link with lots of pictures. CSS Appomattox link |

I too, missed the original post, and the link. I just finished reading link and found it very interesting, great story!
I did a little diving in Elizabeth City in the late '70s. Also in the Trent River at New Bern and in a creek southeast of there looking for C. W. relics. I was living in Fl. at the time and did a lot of black water diving, "looking for bottles", and other artifacts. Your relating the story about something bumping you out of the way reminded me of the time I was diving in the St. Johns river near the wreck of the Columbine and something jerked one of my fins! Visibility was only a foot or so and I thought it was one of my diving partners messing with me. I surfaced and saw they were surfaced about 50 yards downstream. I'd also like to recommend the Civil War Naval museum in Columbus, Ga. It is a quality museum and their full size reconstruction of a Confederate gunboat is one of the best I've seen. I'll be looking for you new book when you get time to complete it. |
