When you buy a gun and fill out ATF Form 4473 what happens to the form after the purchase is completed? I thinik the dealer must retain it for up to 20 years, if at anytime they give up their FFL it must be turned over to the BATFE. Not 100% sure but others may confirm it. |

By law FFL's have to keep them for 20 years. If they go out of business before then, the 4473's get turned in to the ATF.
We keep ours locked up in a document safe. If you think about it, a criminal could use the personal information on those forms more lucratively and with less risk than if they steal a gun. |

I'm sure if they ever end up with the ATF they destroy them when their 20 years old.. just like the NICS checks are deleted after 30 days... Two different agencies. ATF gets the 4473's. FBI runs the NICS center. And NICS information is by Federal law, deleted at the close of the business day- not after 30 days. And "by Federal law" I mean they are realy, really supposed to. |

I thought NICS was kept for 30 days... anyway, I hope they really do delete them like when ATF pics up 4473s from a closed FFL, do they just put them in storage or hand them off to be scanned and logged into a database? |

When the Brady Law was initially passed the information was kept for 30 days. Later the law was changed to 24 hours once it was determined that the transfer could proceed. Denials are stored for a longer period of time, maybe permanently based on http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=44&t=297386 (see page 2 paragraph 2). The 4473's from out of business FFL's are stored in a warehouse in WV. IIRC they're scanned into a document retrieval system as time and funding permits. |
