I am curious, how can you legally give a gun as a gift? If it was a new purchase it seems like it would be a straw. Could anyone explain the differences between a legal gift and an illegal buy?

If you give a "gift" and the recipient gives you cash in the amount of the purchase price, you have a straw purchase.

It is legal under FEDERAL LAW (state law may vary) to give a firearm as a gift... HOWEVER if the recipent is not a resident of the same state as the giftee then the firearm must be transfered to the recipent via an FFL in the giftee's home state...
