I have read that it is legal for an American to get citizenship in another country as well. Can anyone confirm this? |
The US Federal Government takes no position and does not recognize Dual Citizenship. Since they don't care, they don't prohibit it. (Note: This is not necessarily true when it comes to things like Security Clearances.) There are some limitations on obtaining Citizenship in another country that requires you to renounce your US Citizenship. Also, obtaining US Citizenship can require you to give up other Citizenships. Keep in mind there are some countries that consider anyone born there to always be a Citizen, and have no mechanism for renouncing Citizenship at all. A Google search will explain many more details of this nuanced area of international law. FluxPrism |

I have British and US citizenship. The UK recognizes dual citizenship while the US does not. As a matter of fact, during the swearing in ceremony you renounce any past citizenship with another country. No matter what passport you have, as a US citizen you MUST travel to and from the US using the US passport. Ask me how I know |
