A friend of mine got into some legal trouble and unfortunately was found guilty. Knowing him for the past 14 years I cannot imagine him doing what he was charged & convicted of so I offered to show at sentencing to speak on his character.

He's looking for a letter speaking on his character instead.

As stupid as my questions might sound here goes:

1. How do I address the letter?
Dear Sir, to whom it might concern, honorable judge or should I find out the name of the judge from my friend and address it directly to the judge?

2. How long should the letter be?
Large, medium or small?

I appreciate any advice.

I have only seen a few cases where there were character letters submitted on a defendant's behalf.  I would address it to the judge as "The Honorable [judge's name]" on the envelope, and then use "Your Honor" for the greeting.  I would limit it to one page.
