Is there any license you need in order to suppress a firearm or is there just a tax you have to pay and forms to fill out?
Thanks for any info

No license.

When you submit the form to ATF, you are "registering" the item in your name. The $200 tax comes back as a stamp (literally a $200 stamp) on the approved form.

Thanks for the quick reply.  Also could you tell me the form that is needed?  I can't seem to locate it on the ATF website.

BATF Forms.

You'll need to fill out a Form 1, get your Chief Law-Enforcement officer for your jurisdiction (usually Sheriff or Chief of Police) to sign it, then send the Form 1, two fingerprint cards, two passport photos, and a check for $200 to the address on the form.

Is this the right form even though I'm not actually building the weapon?  Is there a different form you need just to own a suppressed firearm?  Sorry for so many questions but some people are trying to tell me I need a class II or class III in order to do this.
Thanks again.

You need to find a dealer who has the silencer in stock, and they will walk you through the process, including giving you the right forms.

Use a FORM 1 if you intend to make your own suppressor.

If buying a commercial made unit from a dealer, the dealer will provide a pre-filled in FORM 4  which you will have to take to the appropriate CLEO for his (Blessing) signature.

IIRC the FORM 1 also requires a CLEO signature.

Then you also will need 2 sets of passport photos, and FBI fingerprint cards with the prints taken by some appropriate agency. (PD, Court clerk, mil, etc)

Lots of hoops to jump thru, but you learn to streamline the process after multible purchases. And you only have to do this ONCE per item. There is no "expiration/renewal  date" (Congress forbid!)
