Called Smith & Wesson today asking if it was possible for them to change/convert a SW99 in 9mm to 45? The fellow at SW said it was not possible, as the ATF requires the SN and the Cal. to match. OK, just asking as I can just go out and buy a 45 if I wanted one but I was really just curious. Truth is I cannot hold a 45 with one hand as my arthritis is getting bad. Anybody know about this ATF requirement? Also, how does the Cliner company sell 22 conversion kits and stay within the law? Really goes to show that there is a lot about this business people need to know about. Appreciate any comments. Thanks.

Mechanically it dont know if it is possible to change calibers.

But as far as the s/n and caliber comment, is bullshit. People convert the caliber of their Glocks all the time, as most times it is just a barrel swap.

i know you can change calibers on a sig 226 by just swaping out the barrel and mags

I'd ask this guy if he ever heard of a Thompson Center Contender?

Barrel/caliber de jure is the name of the game for the Contender!

It would be interesting to hear how he figures BATFE let that one slip thru the cracks!

Mechanically I'll bet that the .45 is just a bit wider in the frame and slide and probably not physically possible.

Walther USA gave me the same answer to the same question. Manufacturers are bound by ATF regulations that the end user is not. The Contender is a unique example that probably exists as an exception to the rule.
