I was under the impression that it was ok to do a long rifle transfer private party as long as the buyer and seller were in adjoining states and state law did not prevent this. When I checked the ATF FAQ it says in your own state only and makes no distiction for type of firearm. I knew this to be the case for handguns, but this is true for all firearms? Sorry its a basic question but search is down and I didn't see it anywhere. |

Under federal law, private transfers of all firearms are only legal between residents of the same state. You must use an FFl for all interstate transfers of both long guns and handguns. A handgun can only be legally transferred to you either in a private transaction or by an FFL in your state of residence. The private transfer of firearms within your state of residence may be further restricted by state or local law. Some states also restrict the transfer of long guns by an FFL to states adjoining your state of residence. |
