What happend if you have a collapsable stock on a postban AR?  How would you get caught?  Is it a fine, confiscated weapon?

i wouldn't get caught because i wouldn't do it.

why risk it?

stay legal, it's for the best.

btw, if you get caught, probably both, fine and consfiscation.

And a Federal felony conviction which could mean no guns for the rest of your life; but what are the chances?

The worst part of it would be when they kick in your door, shoot your dog and burn your house down. But there has been less of that lately it seems so don't worry about it. You might not get any prison time.

It seems that several companies are now offering, and have been for some time "adjusting" target stocks for AR's.  Some of them adjust quite a bit-as much as 3-4".  Isn't there a parallel between these and an M-4 type stock??  If not what is the difference, as long as the barrel is 16" and the overall length is at least 26"??  Most people know that an otherwise legal AR (16" Barrel) with an M-4 type stock is right around 30-31" when fully collapsed.  In fact, I have measured my RRA M-4 "Entry" and it is shorter than my Colt on full collapse!!!  Wasn't this law written to prevent people from "concealing" their guns more easily???  Why does the law allow target stocks, but not tactical stocks???

Because the law was written for political reasons, not logical ones; it was certainly NOT based on the desire to prevent crime.  The whole thing is a sad joke.

THIS SHOULD BE A LEGAL FAQ AS POPULAR AS THE QUESTION IS (hint hint, mods [;)])

Like everybody said, it is a stupid, cosmetic feel-good law. A Ruger Mini 14 with pistol grip & folding stock is a deadly assault weapon whereas a Ruger Mini 14 ranch rifle is benign enough to grace the display case at my Wal-Mart. What the hell's the difference?!

While the stupidity of the law and the slim likelyhood of getting caught ALMOST merits violating it, the consequences if you do get caught are extreme. I SUGGEST YOU OBEY THE LAW, PERIOD; but if you are bullheaded enough to be a felon for such a stupid reason do yourself a favor and illegally convert the weapon to full auto, and add a home-made silencer. At least that way when you get thrown in Club FED you will feel you earned it.

Actually, Pulp-the Ruger Autoloaders (Mini-14, Mini-30) were left off the "banned" list and technically are not included in the ban. If you read the law, you will see that the banned weapons are listed AND described.  I think they may even be listed as "exempt" along with a few of the Hunting-style Autoloaders such as Brownings, Remington 7400's, etc.  There have been a few threads describing this and the fact that Ruger voluntairly stopped selling high-cap mags and folding stock rifles to the public BEFORE the ban was instituted.  (I believe Ruger had some "insight" as to when the ban would take effect)

The Ruger Mini 14 is exempted from the ban ONLY in the factory-available configurations as of some date in October (I think) 1993.  There were no factory pistol grip folders offered by Ruger at that time, so you can't turn your mini into one now, either.

The configurations of Mini 14's "exempted" from the ban are pretty silly, since they wouldn't have qualified as "semi-auto assault weapons" anyway, and by not being "named" they didn't get blanket grandfathering like the "Colt AR-15" and "FN FAL" did.

You would get to play "drop the soap" in the showers at the Federal pen if you couldn't snitch out someone more desireable to them.

wouldnt a Cali one-shot lower give you an open post-ban option?
