Every states' license system is linked;  if you have a suspension/revocation in one state it will show up in another.

There are a couple of states that are non-compact states where that doesn't apply. I believe MI is one..can't remember the others.

Not technically true, You could "lie" on your application, although its a CRIME to do so and if you get caught, well you can figure it out from there.

wouldn't it also be costly to get a license in another state.

Because with out showing them a current valid license, you have to pay to take the full exam, written and driving etc....

Funny story: I recently moved from gun hating NY to free VA. First step to buying a pistol: obtain my VA drivers license. Went to DMV, filled out paperwork, etc. Right after I paid, paperwork came back saying that I couldn't get a VA license due to problems in NY., they wouldn't elaborate though. I went home and called the DMV(NY). They told me my license was suspended due to failure of payment from a driver responsibility fine from years ago. They (NY) never sent me a bill or warning or even a letter saying my license was suspended! Easy enough fix though, paid the bill, went back to DMV(VA) the next day and was one step closer to handgun ownership. Long story short, they will run your old DL number in a new state to determine your driving eligability.
I'm not a lawyer or legal specialist, and it may be different for other states, just sharing my experience.

They do more than just take your word for it when determining if your license has been suspended in another state.
