One of the single greatest bands of all time.

ETA - Also one of the only bands to remain consistently fucking awesome throughout all of their releases - all of them, from Speak & Spell to Sounds of the Universe.

Really...what about Journey?!?!

Even if they where at the beginning of the era....the are still relevant today. In fact...they have gotten a new group of fans in the last five years.

For the record...I've always thought they were good, but they sided with "cast" of the "Crying Game" movie and that was enough to make me walk out of the movie and their music career.

YMMV

I was mostly a metal guy in the 80s, but I thought Depeche Mode has some really good songs.

Indeed.

IMO, Martin Gore and Dave Gahan are two of the best male vocalists in modern music since the advent of DM (~1980).

'some great reward' was one of the first tapes i ever bought.  also like speak and spell, black celebration, and MftM.  really didn't care too much for the stuff after that.

favorite songs:

-never let me down (101 version)

-but not tonight

-everything counts (101)

-just can't get enough

-stripped

-shake the disease

just hit wiki, and found an interesting note––both crystal method and linkin park cite DM as a significant influence.

Oh hell yes. I only spent 3 years in the 80's but I desire a light suit, pastel, shirt, a bren ten, and a Depeche Mode soundtrack.

Interesting, as the usual cutoff for people is between Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion. While it all retains a very DM feel to it, the most defined transition is there (instead of between Music for the Masses and Violator).

One of the Linkin Park guys did a great remix of Enjoy the Silence.

And speaking of covers/remixes... Rammstein's version of Stripped is also good - albeit different - and by all accounts, DM agrees (that it is good).

I liked Lacuna Coil's remake of, "Enjoy The Silence" too.

Depeche Mode is a big influence behind the entire NDH genre  The members of Oomph!, the band who started NDH, are all big Depeche Mode fans, and you can hear it quite a bit in some of their early work.

Edit:

For those that don't know, NDH is the genre that Rammstein also plays in.

A whole genre of music has been inspired by DM's work.  Pretty cool, imo.

I took my little sister to see them at the Paladium in Hollywood back in the early 80s.  I can't recall whether Vince Clarke was still with them before going on to form Yazhoo.

I like them and used to play them a lot on a radio show I did back then.

I like that period of music, from the Clash to PiL, to the Cure and Depche Mode.

I've got a lot of LPs from that time and it's always good to break them out and spin them.

I think Vince hooked up with Alison Moyet in early '85 and they formed Yaz....in '86 Vince hooked up with Andy Bell and formed Erasure.  I think my dates are close....

If I had to choose ONE band to listen to for the rest of my life, it'd be Depeche Mode.

Duran Duran and Journey would be a close tie for 2nd and Whitesnake would be right behind 'em.
