Home alone tonight, wife is gone to class. I was thinking about renting a movie off of itunes but not sure about how that works. Do you "Keep" it for so many days or does it erase itself after you watch it? Anybody got  any ideas

You can rent or buy.  I have Apple TV and it works the same.  It's $4 to rent in HD.  I think it's usually $9 to buy.  If you want to watch it tonight, you better start downloading now because it takes forever.
