The Blitz_308 incident causes me to think of the following question:
When confronted with an assailant, do you (a) shoot at the earliest possible moment that deadly force would be legal, or (b) wait until the last moment to shoot, because you really hope the bad guy will change his mind/run off, and then you will not need to shoot someone? |
|
It will depend on the situation, always. Blitz_308 did what he thought was right as the situation progressed. He's alive and the BG is in jail. He did fine.
There are no easy answers. Think through as many possibilities ahead of time as you can and try to make decisions. Training helps a lot. |

For those that answered 'Option A...'
I have been carrying a gun for over 20 years. In that time, I have been presented with four situations where it would have been legal for me to shoot. My life is ridiculously less complicated, both legally and financially, because I had other options available to me. I think a blanket statement "shoot when it's legal" is unwise. Sometimes it's a good idea, sometimes it's not. YMMV. |

i would shoot at the moment i thought my life was in danger. regarding the incident referenced, i would have shot before, or while, being moved to the secondary location. being moved to another location is usually a pretty good indicator that the assailant intends kill you. |

I would never shoot someone just because it well into the "legal" category. You have to be responsible enough and level headed enough to know when to pull the trigger. If someone poses an immediate physical threat to a loved one or someone who cannot defend themselves, I most likely would pull the trigger. If that person has a gun, ABSOLUTELY, as soon as an opportunity presents itself. A knife or other weapon which requires physical contact presents a different issue. If a guy has a knife and I have my gun out, if he is more than say 10 feet away from anyone, no need to shoot yet. As soon as he makes a move to close the gap, bang.
