[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Mechanics Need Help

1996 jeep cherokee generator and check engine light is on. check alternator it is putting out about 14 volts. engine is running fine. what could be the problem . HELP

Check engine and transmission oil as well as coolant level.

Autozone will hook up a scanner and get the code for free. Let us know what you find.

a bad spark plug, or wire will give you a check engine light.

Probably end up being an O2 sensor.

My Jeep Comanche loved eating O2 sensors.. But I still miss it.

I'm betting he has a code for the voltage regulator.......and it ain't the alternator...it's the ECM

Go to an auto parts store and buy a code reader.
If it's something simple the code will start in the right direction.

96 is OBDII so you should be able to get one for a $40-$50.
It's a fast way for a laymen to ID a bad sensor,vacuum leak,ect
