1996 jeep cherokee generator and check engine light is on. check alternator it is putting out about 14 volts. engine is running fine. what could be the problem . HELP

a bad spark plug,  or wire will give you a check engine light.

I'm betting he has a code for the voltage regulator.......and it ain't the alternator...it's the ECM

Go to an auto parts store and buy a code reader.
If it's something simple the code will start in the right direction.

96 is OBDII so you should be able to get one for a $40-$50.
It's a fast way for a laymen to ID a bad sensor,vacuum leak,ect
