...have given more to Haiti on their cellphones than the European Comission, and the governments of Britain, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Canada, and THE UN. That was as of yesterday. At 10,000 contributions an hour, you could probably start adding countries together, and we'd still come out on top. And this is with a weak economy. Furthermore, the following is a less than exhaustive list of US units, agencies, and volunteers in Haiti: USAID Homeland Security Management team FEMA Virginia Task Force 2 Texas Task Force One Health and Human Services medical team ICE Detention & Removal Operations SOUTHCOM AFSOC 1st Special Operations Wing, 720th Special Tactics 18th Airborne 82nd Airborne 22nd MEU USS CARL VINSON USNS COMFORT USS BATAAN USS FORT MCHENRY USS CARTER HALL USS NORMANDY USS UNDERWOOD 55 personnel from Balboa NMCB7 CGC FORWARD CGC VALIANT CGC OAK CGC TAHOMA CGC MOHAWK Los Angeles County Fire Department Orange County Fire Authority's Task Force 5 Sacramento Fire Department's 72-member California Task Force 7 Fairfax County Urban Search and Rescue Fairfax Hospital (two groups of medical personnel) Tampa Fire Rescue canine teams Doctors, Nurses and supplies from Naples, Orlando FL Stay classy, America. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/haitiquakeaidtechnology |

Quoted: Yes, that's how we roll. That is also why this crisis is not the "hill to die on" for people protesting the government's use of tax money. Agreed. And frankly, I get disgusted by some of the very ignorant statements about "fuck the Haitians" and "let them suffer" and shit like that. Where the fuck is the compassion? Sending aid to a massive disaster area is not the same as welfare checks to people who don't want to work. |

It's all about the oil!!! ![]() No. that's not it. Danny Glover said it's about Copenhagen and how we caused it all and how his buddies like Chavez are so great for the region and other insane ramblings. Another shitstain millionaire celebrety talking shit about our country, where if he had to live anywhere else in the world, he'd actually have to try to make a living with his hands or his back. |

Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: Who is saying Americans are selfish? Uhm... our Rockstar President and his entourage of thugs. Where you been for the last two years? ![]() I thought this was about Haiti, didn't know it was a "bitch about Obama" thread. Carry on. I thought it was about America-bashers. The title of the thread could have been attributed to just about anyone in the current admin. carry on. |

Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: Who is saying Americans are selfish? Everybody else. I must have missed it. I really only listen to NPR and BBC and neither said anything bad about our response that I heard. Look, I'm not saying anyone (worth listening to) has criticized our response. We have a reputation for sometimes coming across as arrogant dicks, and honestly sometimes we deserve it. But we also step up, and we do it frequently and without a lot of showboating. And the world at large doesn't seem to take notice of that nearly as often as they rightfully should. I'm just pointing out the discrepancy between the walk and the talk. "When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all" |

Sending aid to a massive disaster area is not the same as welfare checks to people who don't want to work. Actually it could be argued that the "help" that the country has been getting the last few centuries has perpetuated the problem. A coworker is friends with a missionary in haiti. He works with orphaned children and is very passionate about it. She sent me a link to his site. I kept wondering what those kids have to look forward to in a country with no options. I mean why bother. Take all that "help" and compassion and use it where it will have a lasting effect, because truth be told, it's pretty much been a total waste there. Oh, and it IS like sending checks to people that don't want to work. They are crippled by their religioius beliefs and superstitions to the point where the accept no control over their lives. And before someone chimes in about the "postive success stories" let me put forth this thought. Think back during katrina. Think of how the places declined where those "refuges" were sent. The crime rate rose drastically in houston and other places. What about the robbed, raped, and murdered victims of those sorry animals, does that balence out the success stories? How many honest productive lives is the occasional success story worth? By the time you balence the equation it's adds up to one big fail. How will haiti be any differant?!? They've already had billions pumped into that shithole for decades or more, what differance did it make except make more haitians to export to some other country to ruin. |
