I wish I had a dollar for every friggin' coaster I've made out of dual-layer DVDs. They cost more that twice what standard DVDs cost and are orders of magnitude more likely to fail the burn.
God, I hate those friggin' things. You try to make life easier by putting more family pics on the 8gb DVDs, but in the end you spend more money and waste more time because of reburns. I'm sticking with DVD5s. Fuck it, I'm through with DVD9s.

I have found that the burn speed, burning program and quality of DVD R-DL play a major role.
I have not produced a single coaster since using this combination. Verbatim DVD+R DL blank discs. Burn speed at 2.4 IMGBURN burning software (free at www. imgburn.com) Avoid the following: Cheap discs NERO burning engine. High speed burn rates. |

I'm burning 8x Verbatim DVD9s at 4x, which is as low as my burning software goes. I basically run it in safe mode with only the minimum drivers loaded. This is a quad-core 2.4ghz Dell system.
Plenty of RAM, CPU power, and scratch disk space. It could be the burner. It's a TSST TS-H653F burner, which is a sort of generic burner Dell uses. I have a dual-layer Sony burner on a different machine. Maybe I'll swap out the TSST POS and give it a shot. Shit, I don't think the Sony is SATA. It's IDE. I'll probably have to buy another. |

You have to buy the quality Dual-Layer DVDs like Memorex or Verbatim and then burn at 1X. I have burned dozens and never made a coaster. I use a Plextor DVD drive. I use Verbatims. I have found them to be the best. Memorex is good too, but for dual-layer I only use 8x Verbatims. |

By the Verbatim discs and experiment with different burn speeds.
I cannont burn a good disc at 2.4 but all that burn at 4 are fine. Do not by the hype that slower is always better. Also get a copy of Nero DVD speed (it's free) It will scan your discs and show you the quality. |

I use the Verbatim too, but they are 2.4x... They also burn at 2.4x just fine, no coasters for me. Burners are dirt cheap, only around $25 at Newegg. Might have a spare Samsung SATA (upgraded to Blu-Ray) if you're interested.

Don't wanna make any mistakes. Course I rarely if ever burn anything sooo it's kinda pointless I suppose.
