If you got a phone call this morning that you were leaving tomorrow to be the advance party for your company in Haiti, what would be on your packing list? It's got to fit in two duffel bags.
Weapons are out, ITAR items are out, etc. I'm going to have to find a good water filter. |
|
soap...
DIARHEA MEDS!!!!!!! trust me on these GOOOOD water filter neosporin or some other antimicrobrial oitment for cuts and such. medical will be spotty and getting a small wound in a contaminated zone is NOT fun. LOTS of extra batteries Duct Tape GOOD utility knife you won't mind beating the hell out of also...... don't forget your towel |
|
Quoted: Daytime temps are in the 90s. Run a search of the katrina threads in the survival forum. The weather and conditions will be similar to the gulf coast back then. I'd take four water systems: a pump like the PUR Hiker, a squeeze bottle like a Katadyn ExStream, water purification tabs and a small bottle of bleach. You'll want a sleeping pad and a thermarest. You may want to wind up sleeping on the ground (like I did) and the pad will protect the inflatable. Long pants with reinforced seat and knees, heavy rappelling type gloves, hiking boots. Columbia long sleeved fishing shirt, broad hat. GPS and compass. eta - lights. there will be little if any lighting down there. |

|
Depends on how you are going. Are you part of a larger mission that can provide food, water, and security? If not you'll need more than 2 duffle bags.
Here are some basics: Sun screen Water resistant boots Malaria meds/Amebacide/Anti-bacterial pills Emergency radio (no batt) Light weight long sleve shirts/pants (dont worry about washing you won't have water anyway) Solar charger for phones electronics Extra set of walkie talkie Medica mask and Vicks (it's no going to smell good) Lantern/flash light Plastic tarp |
|
Can you get ahold of some bunker gear? I'm sure emergency services are gone and you may have to improvise. A hard hat at the very least.
Definitely surgical masks, gloves, trauma sheers, a couple good knives. Expect your stuff gets stolen. Buy a bag of cheap candy for the local kids. Maybe even a demolition saw. |

Batteries ! and Candy , I'd go with hard as the chocolate is just gonna melt . |
| Okay, hold on now. Are you still in the Marine Corp? Uncle Sam will provide everything you need to include food, water, shots (injections) and cool looking uniforms. They will be giving you malaria pills and will pound into your brain the importance of not fucking the local women. Haiti has the highest AIDS percentage than any other country unless that has changed. Being on an advanced party means you will need to bring your IPOD and some books to keep you from going crazy. |
|
I see lots of malaria pills comments, but no insect repellent. Make sure its with Deet. Also, when I go into mosquito ridden areas, I take a couple of garlic pills the day before, and am surprised how they leave me alone.
Also, sun block will be important. Also, a water purifier, not just filter. The FIrst Need Purifiers seem to be excellent. Good Luck, Sven |

You might also look at some of the neato stuff in Ragnar's Cross Country GHB thread in Survival. Lots of really good ideas. Here's another I thought of. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&source=hp&q=solar+iphone+charger&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=8658963470713032238&ei=8zJPS9PUBoLUNfrJjZAJ&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CCIQ8wIwAQ#ps-sellers |

Ipod Lap top Sat phone if u can. Deet, deet, deet. Socks and boxers. Baby powder. Asprin. Vicks rub for damn sure. Water bottle. ( plenty of uses ) Batteries for your things. Sun glasses. (cheap spares) Baby wipes. If you like mayo, go to a 7-11 and get plenty of those packets. I learned this during Katrina. All of the items listed so far by everyone are GTG. I wouldn't worry about the condoms. Unless you are just that damn kinky. ![]() |

Exactly. Unless you (as in your unit) are the first one there, which you already aren't, everything will be provided...especially with the US involved. |

Stay away from the Vick’s vapor rub to cover up smells.
It won’t last the long and doesn’t really help that much Per my Mortuary Affairs training at the Army’s 92M school: The smell of death sucks (no shit) but if your brain starts associating the smell of Vicks with what you see, do and smell you experience there you will be at a greater risk for PTSD like flashback. Semper Fi Monk. ETA..Yes I have handled human remains. I did a deployment to Iraq as PRP Marine. |
| Gloves, more gloves..hand san, sat-phone,..water purification....dont touch people..Aids....The hotel Montanta, had pretty good pizza in 95...Liquor store near the Airport/LIght Industrial Complex the military used to occupy......there is a Club Med on hwy1 in between Port-Au-Prine and Gonnavies that was also nice....... |

Consider that you will probably be eating MRE's at least for the first few days.
Take whatever you need to help your body adjust to this. (never mind - I see your name has jarhead in it and so I assume you have your experiance with MRE's) Earplugs for sleeping. More than likely you will be housed with at least one snorer. Take a notebook. Write everything down that you do and who you talk to. Sunscreen and bug spray Good comfortable boots Lightweight clothes A good hat Your own personal first aid kit What will be your function while there? This will dictate what other job specific items you might bring. |

Thanks for the responses, everyone. I'm going in light, me and one other guy, and there will be a bag o'cash going with us. We're going to be living rough. No matter how mch you grow your hair out or how scruffy you let your beard get your not going to blend in. Get a driver who knows his way around, and I never thought I would say this but don't trust the police. |
