Why did you fire someone for stealing if they did not steal? WTF?

I would walk away. If my boss thinks that little of me (knows I didn't do it), then fuck him and his business. "I was looking for a job when I found this one" comes to mind.

ETA: Your first post and your second post do not add up.

Most of the time it doesn't matter what you say anyway, so it's worse if you make a scene.

I fired tons of people who said "I didn't do it!" until I told them we had them on video.

If I was fired for stealing I would ask you to prove it.

Without knowing the situation and the people involved is it possible whatever was supposidly stolen was misplaced, lost, stolen by someone else.

Just because you think a certain person stole an item it may have been someone else. You don't dare leave anything lying around these days or some SOB will move it or steal it.

I've had excellent servers get accused of stealing money from the till at work, turns out it was the owners little princess of a daughter that was already getting paid twice as much as the other staff. Funny how the issue was dropped after that video was played.

If those pics of you and a goat were on the camera, are you REALLY sure you would want to fire the guy who stole it?

Might need to give him a raise.

....At any rate, I get the feeling that he did not steal the cash and camera?

Same here.  From the reaction you described, either they did it, or they have zero interest in the job and in their own reputation.

If the employee didn't do it, they should fight it because it becomes part of your permanent record and will haunt them if they go for a clearance, work for a financial institute, etc.  If they did it and know that you have video evidence, the best to let it go if the evidence is strong.

Make sure you let your state know with regards to unemployment compensation, that she was fired for cause, and send them the documentation to prove it.  She'll be denied unemployment benefits in many states. If you don't, your company will be hit with increased taxation rates for having someone go on unemployment. You won't know this until next year, although you ought to get an announcement regarding the claim.....unless it goes to 'corporate' or something.

Been there, done that, have the personnel file, the tshirt, and the adjudication record proving termination was correct.

i've fired many folks for stealing, i'm some sort of HR consultant

at least a dozen times they say "ok" after i tell them the normal blah blah,  we have proof here here and here. therefor you are terminated the next steps are...

and if i were accused and didn't do it i wouldn't want to work for them anyway.

I was asked to go to the shop where my wife works once, make a purchase and keep my eyes open.

Sure enough, the girl put the cash in her pocket.

She didn't have much to say the next morning when she found out who I was.

Anytime I am accused of something I know I did not do, I:

1.)  Deny

2.)  Offer them the chance to prove it

If it was at work, well then I have a whole different level of motivation behind me.  If I don't do it, they're going to have to PROVE I did it, instead of assume.

Of course, if I know I did it I'd just take it... good thing I don't steal.

On camera is one thing...however I have a story that relates to me...

I worked for a large "retail" chain many moons ago...this location did A LOT OF SALES and had 4 registers.Since they were a 24/7 operation they had MULTIPLE cash drawers.

I ended my DOUBLE shift, turned in my register and went home (I worked for them during the weekends and late evenings...sort of a 2nd job for "bs" money). Someone always called off...so I was the "backup", sometimes they would call me to see if I wanted to work. I get a call that evening to COME IN NOW! I thought it was odd that they did not ask me if I wanted to work, instead mentioned that I needed to be at work NOW! So I asked some more questions and come to find out my till was short...OK...How much? This was not to be discussed over the phone and I needed to come in ASAP.

I get there and everyone is looking at me like an "Alien that just stepped out of a spaceship". Get locked into the office and told that my drawer was short ~$1,200.00 (it was over that amount but can't remember the exact figure) and the POLICE had been involved. Basically they were giving me the option to turn in the money or "go to Jail". I figured at this point they had made up their mind and me telling them "I did not take the money" would do no good...and YES..."They had me on camera" - I bought some "dinner" and paid out of pocket...the change that went in my pocket was correct...I did not violate "company" policy by doing this-. I told them to walk me out and I had nothing further to say...

Next day I get a call...

One of the employees was issued a drawer and when they counted the money in the drawer (this was done with a Manager/Employee before the drawer was issued)...YOU GUESSED IT!! It had $1,200.00 EXTRA! This was NOT the "Manager" calling me, it was the employee that was assigned that drawer.I figured this was some BS play to get me to come in and get the CUFFS or it was legit...(I knew I did not take the money). It was true, THEY FKD UP!(I thought the Manager scammed the money and set me out to dry....but how do you prove it?!?) They asked me if I wanted to come back to work...I got up, walked out of the room, waived at the other "cashiers" and until the day they closed the doors I never set foot in that place again.
