I live near Seattle and have my whole life.  We have a resturant for EVERY asain country.  I have likely eaten at a resturant of each of the asain countries.  There is one question that haunts me to this day.

Do Asain people eat bacon?  I have never seen bacon on an asain menu or in any dish on an asain menu.

五花肉 (wu hua rou) is a major ingredient used in many Chinese dishes.

There is a Chinese dish that is smoked pork with garlic shoots. Its as close to bacon as I have ever had in a Chinese restaurant.

I just asked my wife (Korean) about your query.  Her answer made sense - "No, Koreans don't smoke meat.  Smoking meat would indicate that there was an abundance of meat".  Basically, smoking came about to preserve unused meat.  In societies where there isn't enough meat, this process would never be discovered.
