My wife and I were just sitting here, each using our own laptop, and she tells me that she's got some kind of virus alert thing happening. I get up and take a look, and the screen looks just like your standard XP "My Computer" window showing a bunch of virii and trojans detected, but at the top instead of C://program files/whatevervirusscan, it has a URL with some kind of "virusfind..." BS in it. On top of that is a box that's trying to get her to select "Remove" or "Cancel". I hit cancel and it tries to download "Install.exe". I hit cancel on that and go back to the original box again. Task manager removes the whole shebang and now here Trend Micro antivirus is running for an hour with no virus found.

God only knows what Install.exe would have done.

Please tell your computer-unsavvy SO not to run anything that just pops up saying you have a virus, if it's not the damned installed virus scan.

Get AVG and remove what other crap software you have.

It's her work laptop, with company installed antivirus.

You have a variant of the SmitFraud virus - use a freebie like AVG or SmitRem in safe mode to remove it. FYI  - it mimics and hides inside the OS, so many regular AV programs don't detect it.

Well that sucks. Sure it wasn't a pop up?

I didn't see what it looked like until it was trying to get her to download an .exe file.

Thanks. I'm not going to start downloading stuff to her work computer, but I'll tell her what it is and she can call the help desk.

This is just a common hoax to get you to buy some crappy antivirus software - as long as you aborted the download you are safe..
But as others say - either run the antivirus software you trust, or get AVG, they won't spam you, and their software works..

The problem is that it keeps generating popups, and many virus checkers won't discern it from the OS it mimics.

My wife bit on one and so did my kid. I had to do a System Restore back to the previous day both times. The second time, it kept popping up and blocking me from doing that and I had to kill it in Task Manager and then System Restore. Those fuckers need to be gone after by the Feds.

I could use some help with this, I have it too on a desktop? How the hell do I get rid of it?

Go to http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/ and download SmitRem to your desktop.

Restart your computer and enter safe mode (usually F8 during startup IIRC).

Run SmitRem.

Her virus scan found nothing but cookies. Like I said, she's going to call her company's help desk on Monday.

I had one version that was throwing popups at me right and left..I tried for the task manager and it wouldn't come up...Windows defender has a feature that shows what apps are currently running and you can "end task" from there long enough to run your scanners or find out where the problem is located...Honestly..I fanatsized about murdering the fuckers who built that shit
