[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Winter Coat? (Page 1 of 2)

| With it snowing like a mofo and this winter being predicted as a cold one I am looking for a new coat. I don't work outside and really just walk the dog and streets. Any ideas? I have been looking but its hard to tell without trying things on. What do you guys wear? Nothing too formal, I already have an overcoat when needed. I have checked out the LL Bean stuff and it looks pretty good. |

Columbia is definitely worth a look. I wear a Columbia Bugaboo. It's pretty nice. http://www.columbia.com/mens-jacket-shells/men-jackets-interchange,default,sc.html?sz=1&start=3 |

Two go-to coats are: Filson Double Mackinaw -awesome, classic wool coat looks good with anything from hunting to shirt and tie. LL Bean "Guide" coat with polar fleece, gore tex, then thinsulate -amazingly warm, durable, and waterproof but perhaps no longer made. |
|
After snowboarding my life away during college in CO, I can say this: the Cabela's Brush Buster waterfowl jacket is the warmest jacked I've ever owned. I'm sure camo ain't stylish enough for ya, but I only ever wear a t-shirt under it and have yet to get cold.
(And I've owned/worn North Face, Helly Hansen, Columbia, Arcteryx, Mountain Hardwear, etc) |

I just ordered this jacket earlier this afternoon.

I've got a Marmot that is 3 in 1. The outer shell can be worn as a rain/windbreaker and has a detachable hood, inner shell as a puffy semi-warm jacket or both together as a winter/ski jacket. Lightweight and warm. The outer shell is very durable and waterproof plus it has zipper vents under the arms for spring.
This is the one I have. Its expensive, but in my opinion, worth it. I just picked the first one I found online that is like mine, you may be able to find another for less if you shop around. |

Where you live plays a giant role in this.... I'm out in the nasty of nasty by choice and I don't have a massive coat. I layer. In -20 I go synthetic against my body to wick the moisture, a layer of merino wool, a good soft shell then a wind/water stopper gets me through anything and I never over heat. |

I've got a closet full, but I'm not happy with any of them. I have a couple of carhartts and while the heavy weight is warm and works fine when I'm outside working, when you sit down in the thing the collar ends up over your ears. I've never been happy with a 3-in-1 type coat for everyday wear. Everytime I go to put the thing on it always seems to me as if I need to change the "configuration". I would really like a lightweight low profile jacket that isn't bulky, doesn't restrict your range of motion, and that wouldn't break the bank. I'll have to give the llbean jacket a serious look. Thanks for the link. |

Try this 5.11 fleece jacket for 30 bucks in the closeout area. http://www.lapolicegear.com/511-48001-parka-fleece.html Then add a decent outer made of Gore Tex or Exalt and your set, you can also go to lapolicegear.com and get killer deals in the 5.11 closeout section on their jackets, the Aggressor I have was purchased for on there for 80 bucks and provides much warmth, all that is needed is a good pair of gloves and a watch cap or balaclava and I am good into the teens or 20's. Its all in where ya look for the deals. |

I have checked out the LL Bean stuff and it looks pretty good. I am a big LL Bean fan. It is much more durable than say Columbia. I had a jacket that was at least 5 years old and the zipper went bad. I sent it to them, they fixed it and FedEx'ed it back to me. My only cost was to UPS it to them. The zipper on my Columbia jacket made it thru two winters. ETA, I just picked up one of these a few weeks ago. http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?page=tuckermans-jacket&categoryId=51598&storeId=1&catalogId=1&langId=-1&parentCategory=504722&cat4=504714&shop_method=pp&feat=504714-sub2&np=Y |

I have a Squall Parka and love it. Not the sexiest thing, but warm and windproof and still works for everything up to business casual. |

Wll, it doesn't get really cold down her ein FL, so winter coats are not a staple of my wardrobe, though I have a few winter jackets, including my ECWS Parka, a repro M41 Parsons Jacket from WW2, two leather jackets (one black, one brown) and two of my service uniform jackets for cold weather (one of the jackets and tyhe two service jackets are from VF Imagewear, aka North Face).
Been wanting to add a US Navy Pea Coat to my wardrobe, but damn, they are expensive, even at the surplus stores where I go to, plus getting one in my size is a bit of a challenge, not in the sense that is hard to get, is because my size (LARGE) is popular and not that many out there int he surplus market. |
|
Quoted: Quoted: Still have my issued Pea Coat from the Navy. Were they 30 oz back in 1987? Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile Mine is from the 60s, and damn this thing is heavy and thick. I waited for a bus for 30 min in a pea coat in temps under 10 F last Thursday and was fine. Carhartts arent bad either! |
