ARe they the same shields SWAT used when they invade the wrong house? Also, will it withstand a rifle round? If so, up to what caliber? Thanks !

They can stop ANY round, but if you get shot in the foot you die immediately, so be careful.

most true riot shields are just a big sheet of curved plastic thats designed to prevent the officer from being hit with rocks and sticks and stuff and is use to push crowds.

If the shield is designed to stop bullets, then its a ballistic shield. Those things are much more heavy and expensive and im not quite sure what they're made of.

A more interesting question is just how would such a device (A Durable, nearly impervious shield) change infantry warfare if it existed.

They'll stop light rifles *ONLY* unless they're specifically designed to stop .308 and larger. If they are, they're extremely heavy.

COD4 is an arcade game with zero basis in reality aside from gun names only.

None, to fucking heavy and it would depend on the human reflex to be employed.  Oh and you can't shoot fuckers if you are standing behind a shield

and hand grenades in the ass would sting...

now back in the days of the phalanx on the other hand... practically invincible

Real riot shields are not the same as ballistic shields but they are not plastic.

Only the ballistic shields are designed to stop bullets and they have different ratings.  Actual riot shields are designed to stop rocks and beer bottles.  In other words, the way-cool Gulag level in Call of Duty is complete BS.  Then again, the way-cool SPIE extraction at the end of the level would probably have resulted in 4 dead operators getting impaled or knocked off from hitting rebar and concrete, but hey, it's a video game.

Hahahaha, oddly enough I happen to have a riot-shield... It's about a half-inch thick of lexan, which is pretty tough stuff.  If I recall correctly, it's rated to withstand most shrapnel, but it's definitely not ballistic.  You can't see through ballistic rated shields other than through a little visor of heavy duty bullet proof glass.  Otherwise it's just a big square of Kevlar/Metal/etc...  This thing is pretty tough though o_O

Wtf, are you supposed to wave that thing around to block incoming fire?!

No a riot shield made of lexan will NOT stop rifle rounds; the real world isn't Call of Duty

At most, it would stop small fragments, and pistol rounds, but anything stronger than that, you're SOL.

I dunno. I could see in a few cases where it might be handy for peeking over an obstacle... but that's what a periscope is for. I saw a website a while back... kinda like the "Gavin" guy's pages... that touted little clip-on gunshields for the end of your AR, so that you could have cover while firing. I'll post a link if I can find it. It seems like the Israelis played with the idea.

Most ballistic shields are rated IIIA which stops magnum caliber pistols.

Pointless for warfare.

They can withstand a 100 round belt of .308 from what I can tell.
