Wife wants a very small, portable computer.  She wants to take it from room to room in our house, yet be able to access email and the internet.  We already have a desktop and wireless router.  She also wants it to use the Windows operating system and be able to run her regular windows programs.  Did I say it had to be small?

The names I keep hearing are the Sony Vaio, ASUS, and Dell Mini10.

Any recommendations or advice would be appreciated.  Price is not an issue - it is for a Christmas present for her.  Thanks!

Look into the net books. these are good if she is only surfing/word processing http://www.netbookreviews.com/

ETA, these puppies are small.

There is a video of the Lenovo near the bottom showing it playing Crysis

Pretty damn powerful for a mini laptop.

Agreed! They've been on my Christmas list for the last couple years.

The one thing you might want to do is buy a memory upgrade. They all only come with 1GB of memory out of the box, (intel requirement for Atom CPU's IIRC) and more would be better. Other than that, they are amazing computers for what they do.

Asus 1000HE won Maximum PC magazine's "netbook of 2009" award.

ASUS, huh.  And here I was leaning towrd the Dell.

What ASUS would be recommended?  Surfing, word processing/email.  No games, but maybe some photo editing.  She doesn't care about watching movies either.  Again, price really isn't a concern, but portability is.

Thanks!

Well, shit.

Now she tells me she wants it to be a touchscreen.

Does she really understand how nasty a touch screen will look after thirty seconds of use?  Horrible idea for a primary computing device IMHO.

Just get her an Asus...

Asus 1005HA or the Asus 1008. Best netbooks around. Dont pay over $350 or your overpaying, get a 6 cell battery model.

STICK WITH ASUS. I own 4 netbooks, all asus. I have tried many like them, none compare unless you are trying to do packet injection through linux....and im pretty sure you arent

here is a slickdeal on a 3 cell netbook, Asus. You can order larger batterys if you need one. http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1744810

Also, dont go smaller than 10.1 inches
order an extra 1GB of RAM
order an external slim dvd-r if she absolutely needs one

I won't buy anything that doesn't have a CD and/or DVD player in it.  There are several true notebooks out there that are quite small, check them out.  They're a couple hundred bucks more than a netbook, but once you buy the USB disc reader/writer and various other accessories for the netbook, the cost difference is negilgible.

this is a fail argument. dvd drives are unnecessary in todays day and age. any program you want to install you can find online in a downloadable form. lots of programs get put on flash drives now for installation, like H&R block tax software.

in several years dvd's and cd's will be phased out. Sony has already phased out UMD physical media on their PSP's, and now offer everything as downloadable content. this is what is going to happen over the next few years.

anyone who says they NEED a dvd drive doesn't know what they are talking about. please tell me the last time you used yours, honestly. i work in IT and i fix computers for a living, i hardly ever use Cd's and Dvd's.

Whatever dude.  I've been in IT for 12 years and I used the CD player on my work laptop just the other day to install drivers that came with a USB/Serial adapter since my laptop has no serial port.  I could have spent 2 hours looking for the drivers on the no-name hardware providers half-assed website if I wanted to, but having a CD player meant it took 5 minutes.

Just out of curiosity, why do you feel the need to be a condescending cocksucker when disagreeing with someone on the internet? I stated *MY* personal preference, and gave food for thought to the OP.  I don't give a fuck what YOU think about my taste in computers, and just because you don't agree doesn't mean I fail or don't know what I'm talking about.  Some of you douche-bags need to learn to behave on the internet as you would in person, and I dare say you would not have made the above comment if we were both in the same room.

All the "cocksucker" and "stick with ASUS" posts in this thread have given me a long, rubbery erection.
