Online background checks, the kind that cost $19.95 to $49.95 or more, are they worth it? Do they really reveal the important stuff?

I have not been a perfect person all my life but I should not have anything in my background to indicate violence including sex crime.
I might like to do a background check on myself to see if is accurate and what a perspective employer might see. Or on someone else to see if I want to bring them into my home or into my life at all.

Any recommendations on how to or where to get a thorough background check?
What types of things does a background check show?

Thank You

Nobody here has ever tried a pay background check!  Noone? Ever?

Usually just shows dates, maybe a case number, charges, outcome.  Nothing too detailed.  Everything from traffic tickets to criminal convictions.  Confedential stuff like juvi and mental health would most likely be kept out. It can depend on where the company gets their info from.  So states allow you to look up background checks online at no charge but say they have no accountability over the accuracy.  Some states, like mine, make you buy the background check from either the courts or state police.

If you have lived most of your adult life in one state then I wouldn't do a background check beyond that state.  Look at the websites of your local pd, sheriff's office, or state court.  There should be info on their on how to do a background check.  Could even be cheaper than going through one of those companies.

I conduct background checks all the time (others pay me do it not just for fun).  There is NOT one internet cheapo database that will provide you with a good background check.
Unless you have access to NCIC (which will be a felony for unofficial use) there is no central location to obtain the information you want.  You cannot do it nationally or even statewide.  You must check every county in every state to have an absolute thorough background (good luck with that).  But an adequate check would be to run every jurisdiction a person has ever been tracked through.  Sometimes this information will even point you to a jurisdiction that they have never tracked through.
