I loved the 80s shows: Simon & Simon, Riptide, Magnum, Hardcastle and McCormick, Street Hawk, Airwolf, etc, etc. I think people are more into living their lives vicariously through reality shows (American Idol) or shows that portray reality through real or imagined technology (CSI). I don't think people watch TV anymore merely for the entertainment value. |

There have been decent shows on, even recently. However they are considered too cerebral. Think of Jericho, The Unit, and Firefly. All really good shows that no one watched because they didn't pander to the easy laugh or soap opera drama... saw several episodes of jericho...good, but it isnt on now, the unit was decent....but i still dont think theres anything like those old school ones..."do something silly, so i can break your legs"-kojak |

Go rent the first season of The Wire. Best series I have ever seen, bar none. know not of this show? details... should also say i dont get all the high cable shows, usually get a red box, watch football, or get on the internet if im in the house... You know the "dirty cop in maryland" threads? That is basically 'The Wire.' They all seem like decent cops trying to get the bad guys, but they often use unjustifiable techniques. (I am only 6 episodes into the first season, but a lot of people have recomended it, and so far they have all been right.) |

There are some good shows on now, but you've got to really look hard for them. Nip/Tuck has been going downhill, but its still pretty good. Dexter is really, really good. Sons of Anarchy is the best thing on TV. Burn Notice starts back up in January and its deffinently worth a watch. Top Gear is a British show, and I have to download it to get uncut episodes but its really great. Dollhouse has been getting good, but I heard a rumor its being canceled. I'm not sure if I like Castle just because its Nathan Fillion in the lead role or not. |

My serious answer I think the reality shiws took off after a writers strike a few yeArs ago Then they found a. Folks watch b and they are cheap to make That's very true but I also think that freed up a lot of money and creative energy for each network to produce a few flagship high-quality series. Other networks that don't even produce reality shows are creating their own signature series now - see Showtime (Dexter) and AMC (Mad Men). |

It is really very simple:
It is cheaper for the networks to produce "Reality" shows than to produce the other types of shows. Look at some shows on the cable channels. Burn Notice, Lie To Me, Leverage, etc. are actually pretty good. -OR- Just watch the classics on one of the retro stations. Mannix was one of the most violent shows ever shown on network TV. Mike Connors got shot, knocked unconscious or drugged on every show. The Rockford Files was also good. |

I have the DVD collection and watch it often. "Omar commin' y'all, Omar commin!" Best character on the show. "Now you knows I nevers put my's gun on nobobdys wun't in the game yo" - Omar Little 'Life is the shit that happens between moments that never come" - Downtown Lester Freeman |

Quoted: Wasn't china beach an anti-war liberal show? ![]() Maybe I'm not remembering it correctly though..... The same could probably said about MASH especially, after Alan Aldan took greater control of the show, but I still love to watch it. Another old classic I love is Hogan's Heroes. |

As the years have gone by, TV writers have gotten lazier but have found that the audiences are just as receptive.
Therefore, there is very little incentive for them to work harder just to develop compelling characters and plot lines or write clever dialogue. It's much simpler to just throw together a Black Panther, a White Supremacist, two drunken college sluts, a Guido and a stoner in a house and let them all try for their 15 minutes of fame. As long as there are editors who are willing to take 168 hours of coverage every week from each of two dozen cameras and distill it down to 44 minutes of artificial drama, the salivating dogs that constitute the American TV viewer will continue to lap it up. Excuse me. Judge Judy is coming on now. |

reality shows get the sheep to view "real life" shit plus its way fucking cheaper to keep pumping these out than scripted dramas and paying actors that demand high dollars per ep. sad really. All it is, is an extension of the game show craze. There's nothing inherently more self-humiliating about Big Brother or Survivor than there was about the Dating Game or the Newlywed Game. |
