Yea you get that way when you sit in the cab for 10-12 hours a day. longer when they need to send a relief crew.

When shit like this happens, do the engineers have to stop the train and survey for damage?

Damage to what? Most over the road locomtives are 140 tons plus. Theres really nothing to break under there.

QFT

I came across one on the KLR that had gotten onto the highway through a break in the fence.  Straight 2-lane blacktop so I saw him well in advance standing right in the middle of my lane.

I went to idle and pulled in the clutch to slow down and see what he'd do.  Ended up coasting to maybe 15 feet away and coming to a complete stop before the dumb fucker even realized that I was there.  Suddenly he got the "OH SHIT, WHERE AM I?" look, nearly fell over making a 180 and scrambled back through the fence break to where the rest of the herd was standing and watching this whole thing go down.

as long as the train does not go into emergency, (air hose knocked loose, setting the brakes) it's highball lets go!

We ran through a herd of elk one night.  IIRC we got 14 or 15 of them bastards.  Front of the loco looked like a fucking haunted house.  The laborers were not happy when we pulled up to the rack.

A bull moose during the rut will actually charge the train. The tactic at that point is different.

They speed up and hope to hit them hard enough that the body parts (moose) are propelled clear of the cab.

If they hit him too slow, they end up babysitting the dead moose in the cab till the end of the shift.

All most all of these happen in winter, the moose find it easier to get around in the shallow snow between the
track instead of the deep snow of the woods. Also in high snow areas, where the snow has been plowed,
the moose may not have a way out due to the high snow banks on either side.
