Does anyone have experience with propane generators? I'm thinking of getting my parents one.

There's been a few threads on them over in the Survival Gear Forum. The propane conversions for small Hondas and Yamahas seem to be especially popular.

Im curious as to whether the Natural Gas ones are worth it. Freind of mine and I had a discussion the other day regarding if it would be legal to have a large resivoir tank on ones property that continually filled off the utillity line so that when SHTF and service was interrupted, your generator would have a nice on-site supply.

Most of the back country ranches in Idaho and Montana have propane gen sets. The electricity goes out for a week or more every winter from the snowfall knocking down the lines.

These are big gen sets. They are permanent fixtures, not portable. Enough power to run the house, the barn, well, and everything else on the ranch.

If I was going to run my whole home on a genset, it would be either propane (if I lived in the country) or natural gas (if I lived in town). If I needed portability....trailer mounted, propane....other type, gasoline or diesel.

I have a Kohler 12Kw generator that comes on automatically when the power goes out. It has been very reliable and kept us warm and comfortable when the power was down for almost a week after the ice storm last year.

I have a 12kw Generac that can use nat gas or propane. Mine is on nat gas since that's how I heat the house.  Great investment.  I have a buddy that has the same unit and he's got it hooked to propane. His tank will last 2 weeks or so.

There is a company in WV that offers the tri-fuel conversions for the small gen sets..

Just somethign to think about..  In case of a natural disaster - will the natural gas lines still be up and pumping gas??

It's not terribly difficult to switch a generator over from natural gas to propane (and vice-versa). This allows you to fuel your generator with either utility-supplied natural gas, or propane stored in a tank on your property.
