Got a thumbdrive that I stored a bunch of .docs and powerpoints on.
Now all of a sudden the computer don't recognize it. When I try to open it up thru "computer" and select the drive , a pop up window appears that says this drive must be formatted, do I wish to do that now? I haven't clicked yes....I'm afraid of losing the data. I'm gonna lose 6 months worth of work , aren't I |

You do have your important documents backed up, don't you? File recovery software should get everything back. EASUS Data Recovery will get your stuff back, even after you format the drive. It's not free, though.Yeah, sorta....had everything all on one drive so I wouldn't have to go grab it from this or that file or rummage thru old emails . |

Want to know a dirty little secret about those flash thumb drives? They go bad too. Unlike hard disks which can be recoverable, once a flash drive goes bad, you can't get the data back. It is always, and I mean ALWAYS, worth your while to back up important data at least once a week to multiple locations. |

Damn...ain't you just a ray of sunshine....<sigh> I know , I know....I'm the dumbass here.
Thanks for the info though....I did NOT know that about thumbdrives. Tried it on a different computer. Noticed it doing something strange : Up in the address bar where it says "computer:" the address bar started turning green with pulses like it was loading or doing a search., maybe? |

He has a pretty good chance of 100% recovery with decent software. Before you start buying stuff, try the free software "Restoration". This may work, but I'm not sure if it does for formatted partitions. ETA: If you format the drive successfully, I can almost guarantee that EASEUS will get all of your stuff back. ETA again... Ouch, I just realized it costs $70 bucks. |
| Find someone with a MAC and try it. ALternatively, download one of the free Linux ISO distributions as a LIVE CD. Boot your machine with that CD and it's possible than Linux may be able to access your data and then you can copy it off to another device. This worked for me when I had a flash drive go bad that Windows would not access. |

IT WORKS !!!!! ![]() Not only did it retrieve all the important data, but it also picked up some other files that I thought I had "deleted" on the flash drive. Its not freeware, but for me, it was worth every penny. Hell I saved a third of the cost of the software just in gas from not having to drive out of town to the nearest computer specialist; not to mention all the time saved in having to go back and retrieve / re-make all the .docs, .ppt, .pdf's So...early Christmas present for me, woohoo. Thank you all....... |
