Commanders Palace is in the 'uptown " area.
Nice, and expensive. I have had good to average food there. It is written up in many magazines. Dont know if its still there, but Pascals is/was uptown also. Great Italian. These are recollections of a few years ago, say pre-Katrina. I have not been back since the hurricane. Someone with more contemorary knowledge should be along to update your choices. There is/was a great selection there, I just dont know who survived the storm. |

As far as a good, classy steakhouse try Dickie Brennan's in the Quarter. |
Central Grocery is a must for a Muffuletta, don't get one anywhere else, as thay are not as good as Central Grocerys.

| When I was there in Oct, I had the Muffaletta at Central Grocery for lunch. Unbelievable!!! I also at at Deanie's 3 different times during a 4 day stay. The BBQ shrimp was that good. Service was great as well. If you go after 4pm, see if you can get Michelle as your server. |

Two things you must do.
#1 Mother's for breakfast or lunch!!!!!!! Get ready to wait in line. I prefer breakfast, grits and debris and the biggest ham biscuit ever! The ham is cooked on the premises. You will not be disappointed. It's a bit of history also. Not far from Bourbon street, easy walk. #2 Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse. It's a block or two off Bourbon Street. One of the best steaks I have had and the smoked chicken gumbo was to die for. One of my top five meals of all times! |

Herb Saint is a great french restaurant. Best duck I have ever had in my life there. For a more casual fare while you are in NO, check out Jack Dempsey's on Poland Ave. Best local, fried seafood type of restaurant around in my very biased opinion. My aunt and cousins own the place. Across the street from 4th Marine Div HQ (Naval Support Activity New Orleans). |

If you read this before noon, swing by Sweet Lorraine's for their Champagne brunch (ignore the fact that the place looks closed... and a little scary ). Don't miss the WW2 museum.
Jack Dempsey's is just mediocre fried food, but across the street is The Joint, which has the best hole-in-the-wall BBQ in the city. Drago's is better seafood than GW Fins. Commander's Palace is overrated. |
