Pistol Explodes In Deputy's Hand
Posted: 4:49 pm EST December 4, 2009 Updated: 7:44 pm EST December 4, 2009 MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. –– At first glance, the Glock 21 Marshall County Chief Deputy Kevin Cecil was handling looked like any other gun. But he pointed out there was no trigger, the gun was cracked and the small metal pins were missing. “The firearm that one of our officers was using exploded on him," Cecil said. Cecil said a Marshall County officer was shooting at the range Tuesday morning when his service weapon literally blew up in his hand during a round of fire. "The weapon went to the ground, the range officers were yelling for cease-fires," he said. Cecil says it was the first time the .45-caliber pistol had ever been used. "All that energy blew out on the top of his hand. And that's where his injuries are," Cecil said. The deputy is now recovering at home. He's still undergoing testing to find out the severity of his injuries. The chief believes bad ammunition caused this bizarre accident, but he's looking into it further. "We have talked to the pistol manufacturer, the distributor, the ammo manufacturer and distributor," he said. The chief has never seen a weapon malfunction this serious and he said he hopes to never see anything like this again. Copyright 2009 by wtov9.com. All rights reserved. Quoted: It's funny how I have about 10,000 rounds through my Glock 21. Shit happens. ![]() Looks like they are blaming the ammo and not the gun. I probably only have about 2500 rounds through my 36 with no problems and it supposed to be the most problematic Glock model. |

For the sake of conversation, what would 45GAP do in a 45 ACP chamber? The .45acp headspaces off the case mouth, so the .45gap would probably be shoved too far forward in the barrel chamber to even be fired. If it did manage to fire, probably nothing. Same size bullet. |

Quoted: I am guessing it would behave similarly to what happens when you fire a .380 out of a 9mm or a .40 out of a 10mm. If the extractor holds it tight enough, it will fire, but then fail to cycle. I don't think it would KB, but I don't want to test it.For the sake of conversation, what would 45GAP do in a 45 ACP chamber? |

I thought GAP was higher pressure, like a +P equivalent. ETA : just looked it up However, when both cartridges are fired from a four-inch barrel, the performance is virtually equal with 185- and 200-grain bullets. To achieve this parity, the .45 GAP is loaded to the same maximum average pressure as the .45 Auto +P: 23,000 psi. |

Per the article, it was a brand new gun being fired for the 1st time. I bet the department bought some really cheap range ammo during the recent ammo shortage and it was a bad round. |
| Spend enough time around guns and you will see all kinds of KBs. I have seen several Glocks explode, all were using lead ammo. I have seen a HK slide crack. Lead ammo again. I have seen a Beretta 96s slide damn near come off the rear. Several pieces of metal hit the shooter face. I had a new Sig P220 explode on the second mag. In every case the problem was the ammo. In my Sig I probably had a triple charge of powder. Now I use only Hornaday. From rifle to pistol that is all I buy. Some NORMA as well. It is expensive, but a few cases at a time and you get a small break in the price. |

what type of ammunition were they using is what I wanna know?
watched the vid, case head falure and/or a hot load. The only handgun problem I have had was a desert eagle in .44mag old IMI version. The slide woulden't close completely after one of the meny rounds I fired that day... It had to be disassembled and put back together.
