Friend's computer.

She boots up and nothing happens.   There's a black screen with the mouse cursor and NOTHING else.   No start menu, no computer, no icons, nada.

Any idea WTF is happening here?

Are there any USB devices plugged in when booting up? If so, disconnect them and reboot (excluding keyboard or mouse if they are USB of course).

If the PC has a USB keyboard or mouse, go into the BIOS and make sure "Legacy USB Support" is disabled.

I have encountered the issue you described on two different occasions. One time I had to unplug a USB TV card on my desktop and the other time I had to disable the legacy USB support when I used a USB mouse on a laptop.

Just something to try

What do you mean "Weird Vista Problem"?  Vista has been one problem after another since first released.  And this bloated op system is not even patched well and they are introducing Windows 7.  And a bunch of those installations are failing.

I was happy with XP.

Looks like its this one, as she just called and said she could bring up the task manager.  What a pain in the ass.

She might be set for dual displays, with the primary display disconnected.
