I have an Olympic Arms ar-15, 16" barrel, carry handle and the rear sight has to be adjusted with the tip of a FMJ round. It's very basic.

What is it? An M4?

I've not been keeping up with (remembering) the terminology.

sounds like you have an A1,

A2, has carry handle and adjustable knob sights

A3 is a flat top

M4 has Barrel cut out for Grenade Launcher

A4 is the flattop.
A3 is a variant of the A2 with full auto instead of burst.

ya, it's an M4 if you have the colaspsable buttstock

dont worry about the A2/A3 bullshit as it pertains more to the .mil weapons, not the civilain stuff

Many people consider both A3 and A4 to be flat-top receivers.

Including Colt.

Yep colaspsable stock, I've also added a cheap bolt on rail underneath the fore grip in order to add a vertical fore grip that pivots. The vertical fore grip also keeps my spare gas rings, ejector and firering pin.

Most manufacturers will call it an "M4" if the barrel is notched for an M203, even if the barrel is 16"

But does it have the M203 cut? Without it, it wouldn't be an M4 'clone' - it would be a CAR15.
BTW - an M4A1 would have an A2 style upper. Although I've seen C7 (A1 sights w/case deflctor) variants with the M4 profile barrel, and the Israelis have some so configured as well.

No notch in barrel. I do have a bayonet lug though.

Did I read somewhere here that a modern bayonet will not fit on my 16" barrel?

by that logic it would still be called a CAR15 unless it has burst.

I think its safe to say that any AR15 with a colapsibal buttstock and a 16" barrel can be called an M4

Well, it seems that I'm not the only one that doesn't know how to designate his rifle.

Does it matter that my rear site is not thumb adjustable?

I'd call that an A1 carbine. [shrug]
