What and how do you carry to keep the bulk down? How do you keep it from being obvious?

I was in NV recently and OC'd a XD45 in a Serpa. Just for fun (it was a new holster), I played around while at home with it in different positions on my belt. I could easily see it in the mirror no matter what.

What am I doing wrong?

I wear mine a 4 O'clock. It is an IWB holtster made by Tucker gunleather. I can hide my pistol fairly well under a tee shirt, although it prints when I move.

Wearing a hoody, coat, or a button up shirt willl help with concealing if you are wearing outside the waisband

Honestly, I carry a smaller gun IWB.  I dress for the weather a well.  I've carried a full sized 1911 concealed with no problem in summer, but it isn't comfortable.  Fat double stack pistols do not conceal well without a winter coat.  Personally, I carry a PA063 now most of the time because it's light weight, accurate and in a decent enough caliber.  Your choice, your comfort level.

I carry a single stack (Kahr PM9) in a soft IWB holster.  you'd have to know it was there to see it.

I don't try and hide it as OC is legal here. The only time I do is on campus, then I use a shoulder rig and no one is the wiser

ETA: the XD45 is hard to keep hidden as it is so wide. Get a single stack.

S&W 637 in a pocket holster works well for me and my fat ass. Also pleated pants help to hide the fat  errrr pistol.

I carry at 11 o'clock and cross draw. In the colder months I wear a large carhartt jacket that covers everything. In the warmer months I wear a large light windbreaker that covers well. When I can't avoid Vegas in the summer I get a lot of weird looks weaing a jacket.

I don't like IWB holsters of any kind, period.

I prefer a DeSantis "belly band" worn OVER a plain white T-shirt and UNDER a loose fitting button down shirt of some sort, so my weapon is under my left arm held tightly against my body.

This offers extreme comfort (especially while seated, as in a car) - I can easily forget this rig is in place.  (I am slim.  This might not work for fat guys.  Just saying).  With practice, the weapon can be drawn just as quickly as from an IWB holster.

It is also very resistant to "printing" unless you are stretching or bending in an extreme manner.

All you have to do is be a little careful in public and you are GTG.

Seriously, assuming you are right handed, the best and easiest place to conceal a weapon is against your body under your left arm.

This, exactly.

When I first got licensed to carry I will never forget the first time I "live carried" outside the house in public.

I felt like I was radioactive and everyone would somehow "know."

After a few days, I realized that people do not pay anywhere near as much attention to you as we tend to think they do.

Fact is, most people walking around in public are almost completely self absorbed.

Yup, and in the case of a print, most will assume it's a cell phone.  (if they saw it at all)

for a while I was carrying my 1911 in a serpa on campus-just threw a tshirt on and it hid about 60-80%. again, if no one is looking, no one will see it. your best bat to actually conceal is to carry IWB. I carry any of the following fairly regularly: full size 1911, compact double stack 1911, .25 pocket pistol, 38 revolver and a few other not as regular. carried OWB and IWB and found that to hide it well, you need a IWB.

So what are some good IWB holsters?

All my handguns are doublestack with the exception of my 1911. What's a good singlestack to CCW?

I may be moving to South Lake Tahoe (the NV side). Here CCW is all but impossible so this is all new to me.

How do you not make it obvious?

1. Manner of dress –– you can conceal a bazooka in a reasonably loose fitting polo shirt and some cargo pants.
2. Quality concealment gear –– Raven Concealment's stuff is the shiznit.

Playing around with a Serpa –– not a fan of the slurpee.

It's called "condition white"...and yes, most people wouldn't notice if you walked around with your pecker hanging out the front of your pants. I don't endorse that behavior, mind you, as it can be problematic to have a litte old lady trip over your johnson and break a hip in Wal-Mart. Then there will be some uncomfortable questions from the cops.

Anyhoo, most people won't notice...but some people don't walk around like zombies at all times so you really should try to conceal the weapon well.

I would get a decent IWB for the 1911 and carry that. The XD45 is kind of big. Maybe find a reason to get a Officer sized 1911.

+1 on the Comp-Tac MTAC. Love mine for when I need to dress up and tuck my shirt in. I have a few other holsters I use, but the MTAC is the most concealbe. If I am just out and about I carry on in a OWB either CC or OC.

I recently picked up a G36 (single stack 45).

Have not yet picked up a proper holster for it.

In the mean time, I've found that I can slide it between my belt and my pants and tuck the barrel and up to the front 1/2 of the trigger guard into the change pocket on my pants (Riggs wear brand pants).

Guess that would be right about the 2 0'clock position.

Very secure, very comfortable, my un tucked t-shirt covers it perfectly and you would never know it was there.

This.

Standing in front of a mirror is almost a waste of time.  Simply getting into a position where you can see it in the mirror is usually going to make it more obvious.  It takes a while to convince yourself that you are the most conscious of the piece.

ETA: In the unlikely event that someone questions you on what's under your shirt I think the words "Colostomy bag" would end all further conversation on the subject.

Equal protection of the laws in the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution FTW!

You can have a concealed loaded handgun in your vehicle in Nevada also (but not concealed on your person in our out of a vehicle unless you have a CCW). Nevada issues non-resident CCW's but you have to take a day-long course and apply to any sheriff's office in person.

What you can carry without too much printing is dependent on mainly body type, clothing styles, and holster choice.

You may have to dress around CCW. I've found that Dickies shirts work extraordinarily well for me.

Get a quality holster. Don't skimp out. Something like a Milt Sparks
VMII for leather, CTAC for kydex, or MTAC or Super-tuck for hybrid. These will hold the pistol tight against your body comfortably.

I've found that 3:30-4:00 position works best for me.

My body type and the fact that I am manly as shit allows me to conceal full sized pistols. I regularly carry a CZ75 SP01 either IWB or OWB (with shirt untucked covering OWB. Not even my family could tell)

Quoted:

This is really well put, actually.

You will be insanely self conscious for the first little while––always adjusting your shirt, checking yourself in mirrors, etc.

Even if you're OCing, few people notice.

If you do print, as long as you're using a quality holster, etc. it still shouldn't give a distinctive outline.

If someone notices a bulge, their first though will probably not be gun. I've never been asked about printing.

On the off chance you are asked, just say it's a holter monitor.
