I was wondering what kind of home made target stands you guys use if any. I need some ideas for a club I just joined as their pistol berms don't have any club supplied stands. I can't use any metal targets only paper and this would only be for pistol and shotgun use. Any help would be appreciated!

Well for pistol I used to love throwing a few clay pigeons up on the berm and blazing away.

Otherwise I used to have a small wooden frame with luann plywood nailed to it.  I just swapped out paper targets on the front of it and tossed it in my trunk between range sessions.

ETA:  WTF are you going to shoot with a shotgun if you can't use clays?  Or are you talking about slugs or patterning work?

I used thick steel pipe.(3/8"-1/2")
Anything flat is a bad idea and pipe if cheap and easy to find.

2x4's, some furring strips and drywall screws.

Doesn't your range or club have a list of rules concerning what they deem appropriate target stands?  Mine does.  They even have drawings with instructions for building them.

Some clubs do not allow metal target stands to prevent ricochet and projectile escape.  Berm height would be helpful to know.  Give us more details.

PVC.  Target backers are that plastic sheeting used in signage.  No ricochets.

They are kind of wishy washy on stands they deem appropriate. You have to show them the stand for approval. Metal target stands probably will not fly with them. Berm height is about 20ft. I will more than likely have to ask around at the club but I was just interested in what some of you buys have constructed over the years.

I was in a hurry one time this fall, and I just took the flat lid to a rubbermaid tub, stuck some shoot-n-C's to it and took it to the range to check zero... worked good and the lid is still usable!

The frames that hold the placards for Real Estate agents work for me.

Saw a guy using a plastic deck chair.  Costs less than PVC or 2x4 to assemble a target stand.

Stolen from another site
So after looking around the box O truth I found this http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/edu24.htm it is a target stand made out of PVC pipe. I saw this and was like sweet this will work better than what I have now.

:D

So I decided to make one and do a little write up about how I made mine and what I used.

Supplies:
(1) 10’ piece of 1 ½” schedule 40 PVC pipe
(1) 10’ piece of 2” schedule 40 PVC pipe (the reason that I used 2” instead of 1 ½” is because Home Depot didn’t have any lumber that would fit inside the 1 ½” pipe. Also If you can find a 5’ piece or (2) 2’ pieces that will work as well)
(2) 1 ½” 90* elbow
(2) 1 ½” T’s
(2) 1 ½” Cap
(2) 2”-1” reducer
(1) 1”x2”x8’ piece of lumber
(1) Package of door shims
PVC cleaner
PVC primer
PVC cement

Total cost was probably around $50 or so.

So to start take the 10’ piece of PVC and cut (5) 16” lengths. The take one length and Clean, Prime, Cement (CPC) a cap on one end.

On the other end CPC one of the T’s. On the other end of the T CPC another 16” length of pipe, leave the other end open. Should look like this when done. The repeat these steps to make the other leg.

Now take some of the left over pipe and cut (2) 2” pieces. CPC these pieces in to the open hole on the T, the repeat on the other leg. I used a hand clamp to hold these in place until the cement set up.

Now take the last 16” of pipe and CPC one of the elbows. When doing the other elbow you need to make sure that the elbows are level or your stand will not sit straight and might rock back and forth. To make sure that mine were level, I CPC one end let it set up. Then got the other one ready, put it on and used my garage floor as a level.

Now take your 2” pipe and cut (2) 16” pieces. Take the reducers and CPC one on each pipe.

Now all your pieces should be cemented and ready to assemble where ever you want.

Put the 2” pieces with reducer on the 1 ½” nipple of the T and push together.

Now take your piece of lumber and cut it in half. You should have (2) 4’ pieces

Put one stick in to the opening on the 2” pipe. Stick a few door shims behind the stick to hold the stick tight and in place.

Now all you have to do is tape or staple your target on the wood and your set.

Here’s a look at all the pieces. Nice thing is it should fit easily in to your trunk or back seat and won’t take up a lot of space.

You now have a portable cheap target stand that you can feel proud of cause you made it yourself. Also if you’re a poor shot the wood holding the target can be easily replaced if needed. So if you read the box O truth you can see that mine was a little different but I had to make due with what I was able to purchase.
I use one of those house for sale yard signs.  they are everywhere

My stands are more-or-less permanent and just built out of wood (1x6's) and buried 12" or so in the ground.

If you want something cheap, though, find someone who has cut down a large (30" or more) hardwood tree and ask them to give you a 2' section of the stump. I've got several such stands sitting in my front yard at the moment. Set the stump at the desired range, face one of the flat ends towards you, and use staples or pins to hold the target on it.

Yep!
This is exactly what I do.
Very inexpensive, very easy and quick to construct, very durable, doesn't blow over in most wind conditions.
FTW

Pretty much looks just like mine. I made the legs in separate peices so I could haul it all in my car. Used large bolts glued into holes in the top frame part that fit into holes drilled into the legs for assembly/disassembly. And I staple heavy cardboard to the top frame to staple the targets too. I save large chunks of cardboard to replace the shot-up cardboard when need be.

I have one similar to this, except I didn't cement it together.  I really should do that, maybe add some sand inside to weigh it down...

I use the wire frames from the "Election Yard Signs" and clamp a piece of cardboard with binder clips.

Yard signs - Free (day after the elections)
Cardboard - Free (leftover boxes)
Binder Clips - Free (some how they fall off my desk at work into my luch box)

There's an even better idea that I use sometimes:

find a furniture store that puts signs in their customer's yard - they'll usually use some sort of H-frame wire frame and corrugated plastic signs.

Grab a couple of the H-frames and find some carboard boxes with corrugation large enough to slide down onto the metal wire frames, draw or paste targets onto the cardboard, go shooting.
